“Alzolay is on a real roll at Triple-A, and we’d been planning even before this to possibly give him a couple of spot starts at some point over the next month or so,” Epstein said. “Just to get his feet wet and also give our veteran rotation guys a little bit of a breather during a stretch in the schedule where we don’t have a lot of off days.”

Awesome news. If he flourishes there might not be a need to trade for that elusive LHRP. At least not the ones that barely move the needle.

We still need a good consistent LHRP. I wouldn't count on Hultzen just yet. Think of him as more of a late season addition/bonus. How he bounces back from being used 2 out of 3 days is important. The Cubs know they have to be careful with his injury history.

Yeah, he's already a great story but you almost have to treat him like the Cubs are currently treating Brandon Morrow.

I do get what We Got The Whole 9 is saying and agree with him - Hultzen might remove the need for a Tony Watson-level relief pitcher. He just doesn't eliminate the need for a top-end reliever if you really want to try to win a WS this year.

Good. I wonder if he will get promoted to AAA after the ASB. The Cubs like giving players the ASG before promoting them but Tyson Miller deserves a promotion more than Cory Abbott and there are only so many spots in the Iowa rotation.

But they’ve already promoted the most obvious guy from high-A so I think Miller is in Iowa next week (and Alzolay in Chicago).

Yunior Perez starting for Eugene, working 96-98 in the first.

Signed in the same IFA class as Brailyn Márquez and José Albertos, got a $600k bonus just like Brailyn.

Davis is at .333/.444/.544 with a ~16% K rate through 82 PAs, including .318/.426/.568 with a ~16% K rate in 54 June PAs. How long before he earns a High A promotion? 100 PAs? 150? 200? Those two levels have their ASBs starting tomorrow. Neither SB or MB qualified for the playoffs during the first half but get another shot inthe second half

----

Ethan Roberts is quietly having a quality season for SB, albeit only throwing 1-2 innings at time. I wouldn't mind him getting stretched out maybe next year in MB if he keeps it up

----

I loved Kohl Franklin's debut last night but don't think much of Eugene's offense (though this is not an easy place or league to hit in). Fernando Kelli and Luis Vazquez shouldn't be hitting 1-2 in any lineup

I think they move Davis along relatively slowly. I'd guess it's 50/50 he sees A+ at all this year.

Agreed. If he does see A+, it’s probably a cup of coffee.

7 Ks in 4 IP for Estrada. His first innings pitched since 2017, when he threw 6.1. Hopefully this jump starts him getting starts. In general, the velocity we're seeing in the low minors is promising for The Future. It'd be nice to catch up to the Yankees (relievers) and Houston (starters) in developing power pitching, hopefully passing them. I already think the Cubs do a solid job managing their pitchers' long term health, ingredients are there even now for some high impact pitching to come through

Yeah, even if he keeps up what he's been doing so far I wouldn't want him up at MB before August.

A few years later than we wanted but it's really getting so that you can see the "wave after wave" of pitching. Every affiliate except MB has at least one very exciting guy, and every affiliate has several arms to like. I think this is the best the minor league pitching has been since like ~2010 when Cashner, Archer, McNutt, and Jay Jackson were all in the system at once.
