2019 AFL

They’re slowly releasing the rosters and the first Cub is out. No surprise that Nico is going back to the AFL.

I follow the minors pretty closely and if you had asked me 10 minutes ago who Jordan Minch is I would have said "oh yeah that's one of the Cespedes BBQ kids."

Really glad that Thompson is healthy enough to make it though.

Looks like we're in for another big offensive season in the AFL if the quality of pitchers the Cubs are sending is indicative of what the league will mostly have. Only three of MLB.com's top 100 pitching prospects will be in the league, overall 20 guys from that list are on initial rosters. This is a huge opportunity for Amaya to gain some heat headed into AA, and Hoerner should sit comfortably inside their top 50 for the updated offseason top 100 with another good showing

Good. I believe there is talk behind-the-scenes to also go back to the regular baseball (used for the rest of the minors) for AAA next year. MLB teams are pretty pissed that AAA has turned into a wasteland for pitching prospects this year.

Not sure what MLB does about the baseball at the major league level next year.

Thompson threw 3 shutout with 5 Ks no BBs...He's a guy who could get alot of attention with a strong AFL. This is good because the more pitchers getting national attention the better hidden the more serious upside potential development ceiling guys like Martinez, Gallardo, and Ademan are

I'm no scout, and don't mean to be a negativist. But the couple of clips of Amaya that I've seen, it doesn't seem like he's got all that much bat speed.

I wonder if he'll have enough to hit well at higher levels, especially big-league level?

This has been his most consistent knock as a pro, think it's why - along with being a C in the low and mid minors - the publications have noticed him for a long time but are slow to push him up. Seems fair to me. His repututation was glove first and at that position it's a real path to the majors anyway, plus this era where Cubs prospects have to prove it rather than get annointed right after being signed or selected is much more pallatable

Tens of people are really enjoying the AFL live. Are the crowds usually that small?

When I went in 2013, there was maybe 100 people there. And for the most part, it was player's family or scouts/MLB folks. And that was on Veteran's Day weekend.

I can't be the only one who thinks the troops could put together a fall ball team that would outdraw the entire AFL.
