Nothing against Davis but Howard's the best athlete in the system now. I wouldn't be surprised if Howard's closer to the weight Davis is today than out of HS, and he's still a virtual lock to stick at SS and is going to mash too

I'd take all 4 of the players (McAvene, Nwogu, Steele, and Gallardo) over the two guys ahead of them at 16-17 (Yovanny Cruz and Chris Clarke). I like Jensen in the top 10 and maybe for trade purposes I like even more that he's slotted in behind Kohl Franklin, who hopefully teams have more info on and ask about more in potential trades this offseason. I'd prefer not to trade Jensen among the SP prospects because he might be able to throw a high 90s fastballs for strikes deep into starts and that's sports entertainment

The Cubs have signed four free-agents to 2021 minor league contracts:

C Taylor Gushue - has never been on an MLB reserve list

RHRP Jake Jewell (has Article XX-D rights) - 0+151 MLB ST & one minor league option left if added to the 40

OF Rafael Ortega (has Article XX-D rights) - 1+014 MLB ST & no minor league options left if added to the 40

LHRP Jerry Vasto (has Article XX-D rights) - 0+037 MLB ST & two minor league options left if added to the 40

All four will likely be extended an NRI to MLB Spring Training.

Ortega is out of minor league options if he is added to the Cubs MLB 40-man roster at some point next season, and Jewell, Ortega, and Vasto have been outrighted previously in their careers so they can elect free-agency if added to the 40 at some point next season and then subsequently are outrighted.

https://www.mlb.com/news/each-team-s-yo ... e-coverage

Cubs: Ronnier Quintero, C (No. 15)

The top catcher in the 2019 international crop, Quintero signed out of Venezuela for $2.9 million, setting a franchise record for an international amateur by eclipsing the $2.8 million paid to Eloy Jimenez in 2013. Quintero, 18, features big left-handed power, solid arm strength and impressive leadership skills.

Quintero and Howard being added to Davis, and I think the former two are both higher ceiling prospects, is most of what's keeping me optimistic. Honestly I'll even give Hoerner props for looking better than I thought playing ML games this year. Between the minors being torn up and that it takes 3 of their bonuses to top Bryant's draft signing bonus, these guys are going to arrive faster than we'll be told to expect for maybe another year. I think Howard's up in like 2.5 and Quintero by 2023 or 2024

What did you see from Nico besides a low K rate? The batted ball stats were abysmal; he barely had a positive launch angle. He was a complete and utter disappointment for me.

Way better defense, more size and room to get bigger than expected....My expectations for Hoerner just physically before we even got to his game, were loooow: a fidget with a below average arm, some speed early on because he's a conditioned and young fidget. Turns out, he's not so bad.* I'm not going to kill the guy for not putting up pretty offensive stats during the pandemic. We're still talking a rookie who debuted barely two years after being drafted during the last however # of years that's still a thing, started for a division winner yada yada

I should say that this optimism from Hoerner's contributions are less towards Hoerner's MLB career track (he'll be OK) and more towards the Cubs' overall player development. With the minor leagues shrinking and the NCAA getting fed and soon paid, these 3 year college guys will be expected to arrive pretty fast and contribute. Full context on Hoerner is that he was a back of the first pick who wasn't even a consensus top 50 prospect IIRC...So basically to get that guy to the MLs quickly and contributing to a team that is winning rather than tanking/rebuilding (obsolete, I say!) is a big win within the meta..OTOH these are the ramblings of a mad man

A couple KBO guys for The Future:

This kid is doing stuff the league hasn't seen since Hyun-Jin Ryu, coming in an making a big impact out of HS as a SP. There's shades of Hendricks to his game you might notice just in the clip...Good article:

https://prospectsworldwide.com/2020/06/ ... ng-jun-so/

Jung-hoo Lee has almost a 1:1 K:BB (206:212) and sub-10% K rate in his career, started playing at 18:

https://prospectsworldwide.com/2020/06/ ... ung-hoo-1/

Maybe the international leagues (KBO,NPB, CSN, LMB at least) should get their own thread...I'm pretty lazy

The pitching infrastructure the last 5 years has been pretty depressing. Hopefully Breslow is as good as progressive folks seem to think.

^^ Can't be said enough that Alex Lange busts his ass, basically rebuilt himself in pro ball on the fly. Came into the org with a four seam that had hit a wall, a mediocre two seam, and curveball, left with his velocity starting to recover plus a new slider and changeup, and now is looking back on track again to be an impactful pitcher if not SP

Good stuff, really like seeing former Cubs succeed in other orgs...Paredes and Faustino Carrera are showing up in the Mexican Winter League this Winter, Andruw Monasterio received a (MiL) contract from Cleveland...Vosler has signed a ML contract...IMO these are all signs of a healthier than advertised org with desirable players even at their lowest

Noooooooooo! Unless some new affiliate's mascot or logo or whatever is Bigfoot treating a tree like a bat, the Cubs are taking a huge step back

Sound like South Bend and Eugene will both be high-A affiliates next year so it’s not shocking the Cubs would pick the one much closer.

I imagine Myrtle Beach will probably become their A-ball affiliate so the Cubs don’t have to worry about going to Florida or getting one of the hitter-friendly affiliates in California.

https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories ... -for-2021/

There will be three high Class A leagues, one in the Mid-Atlantic, one in the Midwest and one in the Northwest. That is a significant change from the current system. Many of the teams that comprise the low Class A Midwest League are expected to move to high Class A. Teams from the short-season Northwest League are expected to be used as Northwest high Class A teams. And the Mid-Atlantic League is expected to be filled with teams from both the Northeast (Brooklyn and Hudson Valley have already been announced by their MLB clubs) as well as teams from the Carolinas that played in the South Atlantic and Carolina Leagues in the past.

At low Class A, there will be a league in California made up of teams that largely played in the high Class A California League, one in Florida filled with teams that had played in the high Class A Florida State League and one in the Southeast populated largely by teams that played in the low Class A South Atlantic and high Class A Carolina Leagues.

Cool comments on Nwogu, the 2019 draft, and Davis in that interview, thanks Raisin. Lots of good stuff, granted the company line but also very straight forward with the facts, from Kantrovitz (especially), Dorey, Breslow, Hoyer, and Epstein about prospects during 2020

Also also, the non-interview portion sounded like what Bonanas for Bonanza would be if it was a Cubs podcast. Those people sounded as if they'd lost their minds over the money

Not bad for a 20-year old who has yet to pitch in full season ball:

Noticed this too, and there was this earlier in the year:

Fluff piece on Amaya has him at 6'2" 230, nice

Really good stuff, prototypical frame for the position
