Bruno Mars is a very talented singer, a dazzling performer, but he's definitely more Morris Day than he is Prince

The Bruno Mars Controversy Proves People Don’t Understand Cultural Appropriation

After Bruno Mars is accused of cultural appropriation, black celebrities come to his defense

as a white dude who's been knee-deep in dj culture (hip-hop and dance music) for over 20 years, i find these articles and discussions fascinating. myself personally, i look at bruno mars as safe music for white people. that's not a knock towards his obvious skills as a dancer and performer but it is what it is. like "uptown funk" is all the best songs by the time and the gap band thrown into a blender.

Griping about Bruno Mars getting more accolades than Prince is justified, but writing it all off to whites preferring to get their music in appropriated form doesn't explain why all of the other non-appropriated pop music also sucks balls. I don't think race is the main culprit. I think peoples' taste in music (and just about all media) is just horsefeathering horrible, and that's all there is to it.

horsefeathers, Craig Mack dead at 46? Dude basically disappeared after his first album, but I'm honestly surprised he was only 46. He looked like he was pushing 40 when he showed up:

Drops Mack after 1 album and the song that launched his success; Mack goes and joins a cult.

Mase bounces and becomes a pastor.
Shyne does a bid for him and Puff doesn't visit him once.

One of these things is not like the others.

I'm not saying that maybe Mase sucked...I'm saying that Mase DEFINITELY sucked. If he got Mase to quit, then that's actually a check in the plus column.

Yeah, I'm not a hip hop head, but I thought it was pretty close to unanimous that Mase was a joke.

https://news.avclub.com/dmxs-lawyer-wan ... 1824130347

Operating on the assumption that you can’t really understand the mindset of DMX—and, specifically, his artistic decision to not pay something like $1.7 million in back taxes to the federal government—without first hearing his music, the rapper’s lawyers have requested the chance to play some of his songs as, we guess, evidence(?) in a court of law. Specifically, Spin reports that X’s lawyers are asking to play hits like “Slippin’” and “The Convo” at his upcoming sentencing hearing for tax evasion, both as a way for the court to “understand [DMX] genuinely in his voice”—since he might get too emotional at the prospect of spending as many as five years in jail to speak for himself—and as a testament to his ability to eventually pay the feds back the money he owes.

I'm like 3 weeks behind on this, but Weird Al put out polka remixes of two Portugal The Man songs...Live in the Moment and Feel It Still. Still mostly the original voices with just a bit of Al here and there. Both on spotify, etc.

Ran across this video, which is a cover of Hum's "Stars". Don't read the caption until the entire band kicks it into gear for the first chorus. It made the video even cooler. I was in Champaign when this song originally came out.

Hum rules; I've got my fingers crossed that they actual deliver on finally putting out a new album. Dudes were a bunch of nerds somehow throwing shoegaze and prog and metal riffs together and making it work. And they made the 90's-iest looking videos, too:
