Am I the only one who does not equate rapid rapping with elite skills? It's such a gimmick, it's useless in a live setting, it takes a lot of filler to string the syllables properly. A lot of these dudes (Lucas Joyner, Logic, Tech N9ne) are at their best when they ditch the double-time syncopation that grew stale in 1998.

I’ve been annoyed by the state of hip hop for the past few years. With obvious exceptions like Kendrick, most rap is unlistenable. It’s not just the vocal delivery; I find a lot of the production to be really unimaginative as well

Oh, no; that was directed at the guy bemoaning the state of an entire musical genre with the exception being the only artist from that entire musical genre that he ever mentions.

Basically any take that is a variation of "*genre brand X* is terrible right now" is the sizzling fajita plates of hot takes.

Or it was a statement about my personal preference about hip hop

Personal preference or not, it's still wrong. That kind of opinion about a musical genre is always wrong. Every single time.

It means, "what I hear I don't like, and since I'm not finding the stuff I like, therefore it must not exist and the genre is 'mostly unlistenable.'"

Like, if I said, "the state of alt-folksy, country rock-ish beardos is horsefeathering awful right now," you'd rightly rattle off a ton of acts you think are killing it because that's your thing. Just because you're missing the good stuff doesn't mean it's not out there in abundance.

"Good stuff" is in the ear of the beholder. You might think mumble rap is the greatest thing ever....doesn't mean I do. This isn't hard to understand

it's unfair to think that everyone else in hip-hop are also-rans since kendrick is the current world heavyweight champion. off the top of my head, you have:

vince staples
danny brown
schoolboy q
skepta
asap ferg
run the jewels
ka
young thug
chance the rapper

all of them dropped quality albums over the last 12-24 months or so. hell, even veterans like the roots and big boi released albums that were solid. dig a little deeper and eventually you'll find albums that will suit your taste.

Jidenna
Shabazz Places
Oddisee
Black Milk
Rhapsody
Open Mike Eagle
Amine
Vic Mensa

most rap is unlistenable

I'll say this about Jidenna; the dude has had some mostly fantastic singles, but the actual album that came out last year is "just" good, IMO. I think the guy's got a great album in him that we'll see real soon, but he's not hitting "Long Live the Chief" levels with the debut.

boooooooo! The station of my childhood. I rigged my Harman Karden dial stereo with cable pig tales so I could receive FM signals across the like just so I could listen to Johnny B, Steve and Gary, and Kevin Matthews, along with the music.

this tweet and multiple articles about it have been making the rounds since this morning:

The Bruno Mars Controversy Proves People Don’t Understand Cultural Appropriation

After Bruno Mars is accused of cultural appropriation, black celebrities come to his defense

as a white dude who's been knee-deep in dj culture (hip-hop and dance music) for over 20 years, i find these articles and discussions fascinating. myself personally, i look at bruno mars as safe music for white people. that's not a knock towards his obvious skills as a dancer and performer but it is what it is. like "uptown funk" is all the best songs by the time and the gap band thrown into a blender.
