The Bruno Mars Controversy Proves People Don’t Understand Cultural Appropriation
After Bruno Mars is accused of cultural appropriation, black celebrities come to his defense
as a white dude who's been knee-deep in dj culture (hip-hop and dance music) for over 20 years, i find these articles and discussions fascinating. myself personally, i look at bruno mars as safe music for white people. that's not a knock towards his obvious skills as a dancer and performer but it is what it is. like "uptown funk" is all the best songs by the time and the gap band thrown into a blender.
Griping about Bruno Mars getting more accolades than Prince is justified, but writing it all off to whites preferring to get their music in appropriated form doesn't explain why all of the other non-appropriated pop music also sucks balls. I don't think race is the main culprit. I think peoples' taste in music (and just about all media) is just horsefeathering horrible, and that's all there is to it.
