I finished up my next-to-last semester of undergrad yesterday.

Going back as an adult has somehow been way easier than it was in my first attempt despite the fact that I have a job, a wife, and a baby. I guess I just have better time-management skills and coping mechanisms for stress.

Due to the way things shook out, I only have to take six hours in the spring semester. So getting to graduation should be a relative breeze compared to what I've been going through. I'm excited.

This is my experience working with ANY student who takes a couple/few (or more) years off and comes back. Seriously, much of why they screw up is just lack of caring, time management, miscommunication, lack of maturity, etc. I'm sure this is shocking to nobody but the amount students "grow up" between 18-23+ is astonishing to me. This is especially the case for guys. Anyway, in the business of retention at higher education it's something I follow (or am required to follow) all the time.

Also, congrats! You'll love the six hours of courses if you're used to full-time. Just don't mail one of them in by accident (not that you would). I've had more than several otherwise graduating seniors that need to take re-take their exercise requirement. They simply missed too many days with "senioritis"

Yeah, the amount of work that a 19-year-old considers to be "a lot" of work is basically a vacation for a normal adult.

between the state of public grade schools (in NC especially) and the overall "helicopter" parenting that takes the onus of responsibility completely off the student, it's only getting considerably worse.

OK - back to doom bonering in the harper thread now

Yes, the amount of hand-holding they want is ridiculous.

The new term is lawnmower parents. Like a lawnmower, they try to clear everything out of their child's way.

Congrats!

I paid off the portion in my name last year, but still have a sizeable chunk of parent plus loans in my parents name that I pay and am scheduled to pay for a very long time.

Nice. Mine is down to ~$4,500. Seems like only yesterday that I celebrated it going < $50K.

I was all ready to finish off my student loan debt with this year's tax refund, then we went and had a second kid. It'll have to wait until '20 most likely.

Yeah, I'm turning 50 this year and still have more than $50,000. I'll likely die before it all gets paid off.
