Yuuup.

Police said, in reality, Smollett had paid those two men, Ola and Abel Osundairo, $3,500 by check to stage the attack. CBS 2’s Charlie De Mar has reported Smollett also directed the brothers to buy the noose at a hardware store and the hat and masks at a store in Uptown. Johnson said police have the check.

I've finally realized that making your social media incredibly boring is the secret to happiness and productivity.

So much of Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit is just outrage-porn. And that's how they hack your attention. You get an immediate visceral reaction when you see those posts, and your brain keeps craving going back and looking for more. That's why you randomly find yourself checking Facebook when you were in the middle of emailing that client. Or why you're scrolling your twitter feed while you walk to the restroom instead of looking where you're going.

So I've started pruning all the outrage. The last few weeks I've been unfollowing people who consistently post stuff that gets my blood boiling. All that crap I'd feel an urge to respond to and tell them how stupid they are -- it's just gone now. All those subreddits dedicated to politics? Bye bye. I already know how horsefeathers up the Republican party is right now, knowing exactly who they're dicking over doesn't bring me any psychic wellbeing. I already know how I'm voting.

The outcome is that all of my social media is boring as hell now. And it's fantastic. When I randomly check Facebook I'm sick and tired of it within 2, and move on with my life. Twitter is basically just baseball posts, and we all know how boring that is this offseason. So I'm checking all my stuff far less often, and spending less time on it when I do check.

The end result has been a huge increase in the amount of free time that I have. I've been reading a lot of books and playing with my daughter. And just generally been getting a lot more accomplished with my work and school. I'm much, much happier and far less stressed.

Get rid of all the outrage-porn. You'll feel so much better.

Giving up Facebook has been amazing and that was years ago. It took me a few days to get used to not looking at it but after that I never thought twice about it.

I still have twitter and a sparse following but that’s mainly just following sports and comedians etc. and a few friends tbh.

Do yourself a favor and pull the plug. You won’t miss it.

Yeah, I use it a lot, and its not worth cutting the cord just to get away from the a-holes. There are a lot of groups that are really useful for job networking and resource sharing

Ok, that’s fair. Just my opinion and it was the best decision for me so I can only assume it could be a good decision for some others, too.

I should also point out that it was impossible to be the sarcastic, smartass dick I’ve always been in real-life and the Internet once all my mom’s friends (and aunts, etc) joined Facebook.

Now I’m just that guy in real-life and on a Twitter where I occasionally rant like an old man to my 99 followers. I do, however, offset it with pictures of my son from time to time.

I mean, Facebook is unquestionable terrible and awful as whatever the horsefeathers collective entity it is, but boiled down to the multi-tier communication tool it is, there's really nothing that comes close (outside of Instagram, which is is just as tainted by FB's evil), so, whatever. If it makes some miserable, yeah, they should just quit. But I appreciate that it lets me keep in touch with a ton of people I wouldn't otherwise (and I actually WANT to hear from) via phone or email (is there anything more embarrassing than emailing someone outside of work)?

Giving up Facebook a couple of years ago was a great decision for me. Even with the politics filtered out it became a place for whining and faux outrage...at everything. I limit my Twitter viewing to about 20 min a day. No more Maddow. I’m much more at peace.

Dudes, stop having such horsefeathers friends.

Also: you don't have to accept requests from family members. Literally nothing will happen.

I'm fine with filtering out friends family. I genuinely use it as a news source, which is arguably a dumb thing to do and does make it less enjoyable as a social media platform. But is an easy way to keep up on the world (not just strictly politics either).

Also if I got rid of it as a news aggregate site it would basically provide nothing Instagram doesn't already provide.

Still happy without Facebook in my life altogether. It’s ok if you like it but I don’t.

What social media platforms do people actually use?

Message boards (if that even counts)
-checking and actively contributing to daily

Facebook
-checking multiple times daily, posting maybe a couple times a month. I had to stop notifications a while ago though.

Instagram
-same as Facebook, but definitely checking less, probably posting more there lately

Snapchat
-I have a group chat there with friends which we basically used to replace an actual group text message. So checking multiple times a week for that. But don't actually use the platform for anything else

Twitter
-a lot of times it's through here that I get pulled into tweets, but I will check my notifications now and then

Linkedin
-I get recruiter messages seemingly endlessly, but that's about the only reason I ever open it

Untappd
-Post my Friday weekly train beer usually. This is by far the dumbest, most useless social media platform I use, but I still do that weekly post because.... reasons?

Message Boards - Yes, 2 or 3

Facebook - The most. Connections with friends and family, and professional resources

Instagram - I run an account for my department, but I don't have a personal account

Snapchat - No

Twitter - No

LinkedIn - I'm signed up and I get alerts, but I pay no attention to it

Do you guys have the Next Door neighborhood app? It makes the faux outrage on Facebook seem tame. I still go there for neighborhood news like lost dogs, crime reports, etc.

Facebook: oh hell no. horsefeathers Facebook. I honestly don’t care what your stupid child did or how you feel about traffic.

Instagram: it’s just pictures. I’m on there almost daily.

Linked In: I have it, but maybe there once a month.

Twitter: never post, mostly there for news.

Message boards: two

my next door app is so lame. It doesn’t even really narrow down to my neighborhood, and is mostly people asking for plumbers or nannies. There was one time I was alerted to a semi that missed the Holland tunnel and ended up on a narrow one way road surrounding a nice park. The only thing I use with people I know is Instagram.

The community group on Facebook for my city is like 60% sharing coyote sitings and 20% the same repetitive jokes about said coyote sitings. 10% people complaining that there's too many new banks/yoga studios/etc. 10% miscellaneous including actual useful information to racist rants (cuz "those kids" trick or treating clearly weren't from our city).
