General Chit-Chat thread
Re: General Chit-Chat thread
So I start a new job tomorrow.
The last year has been rough. I got misled about a couple jobs I was a "shoe-in" for which never materialized. Then my wife told me not to apply for jobs so that I wouldn't screw up some vacation plans by being unable to take any days off. Then I got offered a job where training was supposed to start this summer -- only for the program to be ended by the bank due to COVID. Even my attempt to get licensed as a substitute teacher for some temporary income ended poorly when schools closed within a week of passing my background check.
The new job isn't much. It's as a legal assistant and de-facto front desk person at the local public defender's office. But I feel like I can make a difference there. So while it's about half of what I probably should be earning, at least I'm getting good benefits and some job satisfaction.
And it's not like anybody else is hiring right now.

Does anyone here grow their own vegetables? I started small last year and this year I went a little bit bigger, with tomatoes, okra, bell peppers, and 10 different hot pepper plants. Late June in Oklahoma is when the horsefeathers really starts popping and I'm basically buried in tomatoes right now. Really underestimated what 10 plants would produce.

I have a feeling certain people here grow a LOT of one very specific thing.

I've been doing vegetables for about 4 years now. The first year everything did really well. Okra really kicked butt. But the past 4 years have had some combination of slugs, hailstorms, or really late snows/frosts that have just decimated everything. Really miss the okra. The only things that have been working well consistently have been the spinach, arugala, cucumbers, hops, and pumpkins. Although the corn that I just started this year has been hauling. Makes me feel like a farmer!

I have been for years with mixed results. I’m too undisciplined to do it right. But it’s fun to put my farmer blood to work. Tomatoes are generally easy but just as easy to lose to rodents. I’m a big fan of making pesto in the summer if for no other reason than to use all the basil I grow.
