So I start a new job tomorrow.

The last year has been rough. I got misled about a couple jobs I was a "shoe-in" for which never materialized. Then my wife told me not to apply for jobs so that I wouldn't screw up some vacation plans by being unable to take any days off. Then I got offered a job where training was supposed to start this summer -- only for the program to be ended by the bank due to COVID. Even my attempt to get licensed as a substitute teacher for some temporary income ended poorly when schools closed within a week of passing my background check.

The new job isn't much. It's as a legal assistant and de-facto front desk person at the local public defender's office. But I feel like I can make a difference there. So while it's about half of what I probably should be earning, at least I'm getting good benefits and some job satisfaction.

And it's not like anybody else is hiring right now.

Does anyone here grow their own vegetables? I started small last year and this year I went a little bit bigger, with tomatoes, okra, bell peppers, and 10 different hot pepper plants. Late June in Oklahoma is when the horsefeathers really starts popping and I'm basically buried in tomatoes right now. Really underestimated what 10 plants would produce.

I have a feeling certain people here grow a LOT of one very specific thing.

I've been doing vegetables for about 4 years now. The first year everything did really well. Okra really kicked butt. But the past 4 years have had some combination of slugs, hailstorms, or really late snows/frosts that have just decimated everything. Really miss the okra. The only things that have been working well consistently have been the spinach, arugala, cucumbers, hops, and pumpkins. Although the corn that I just started this year has been hauling. Makes me feel like a farmer!

I have been for years with mixed results. I’m too undisciplined to do it right. But it’s fun to put my farmer blood to work. Tomatoes are generally easy but just as easy to lose to rodents. I’m a big fan of making pesto in the summer if for no other reason than to use all the basil I grow.

My heirloom tomatoes, yellow squash, cucumbers, basil and eggplant have given me so much food I’ve given a ton to neighbors. I grow several herbs (not that type Sofa...yet). A great summertime dish is fresh cut cucumbers, tomatoes, basil, red onion, garlic, EVO and lemon zest.

So apparently Gary Larson just quietly started putting out new The Far Side comics earlier this week.

https://www.thefarside.com/

https://news.avclub.com/gary-larson-jus ... 1844322333

Larson’s last entries in the series came back in 1995 after a fifteen-year syndicated newspaper run, although according to a post on his site, he never entirely gave up drawing weird-ass horsefeathers for friends and family. “Despite my retirement, I still had intermittent connections to cartooning, including my wife’s and my personal Christmas card...Once a year, I’d sit myself down to take on Santa, and every year it began with the same ritual: me cursing at, and then cleaning out, my clogged pen.”

That clogged pen led Larson to purchase a digital drawing tablet a few years back, a transition that felt to him like, “sitting at the controls of a 747.” After some practice with the new medium, Larson recently felt confident enough to share some new pieces with fans, and unlike so many unnecessary reboots of 80’s and 90’s franchises, Far Side looks to be as enjoyably strange as ever.

Unfortunately, for now this looks to be simply an intermittent thing from Larson, with no official plans to reboot the series on a regular schedule anytime soon. “Again, please remember, I’m just exploring, experimenting, and trying stuff. New Stuff. I have just one last thing to say before I go: thank you, clogged pen,” wrote Larson.
