In what horsefeathering world? The GOP doesn't give a horsefeathers. Did Merrick Garland not happen? Am I imagining that it did?

In the end, I'm most of the way there in agreeing w/ Nate Silver that this likely won't have a big impact on the midterms (as with previous shutdowns). HOWEVER, I'm mindful of the possible impact the appearance of Dems caving on DACA could have on grassroots energy (no liberal I know believes McTurtle for a second, so to them, Dems are caving). All I have are worthless anecdotes when it comes to that, but I'd be lying if I said I have zero concerns. We're in a different world now, I think.

Yeah, this won't have much to do with the elections, but just in terms of standing up to the Republicans the Democrats got kicked in the horsefeathering taint. Mitch doesn't have to do a damn thing they want and he knows it and was all but singing about it with the language he was using.

Democrats couldn't do anything as this was just a bone to the base basically saying we tried. Their message should now be we can't do anything because we didn't have the votes to keep the majority in the House and Senate, but we need your votes to them back in November.

They got played, they knew it, and they were helpless to do anything the entire time. Steering this to a shutdown was just Grand Guignol theater by the Republicans.

They're trying to force the legislative issues (namely immigration-based) they think WILL help along those lines by needlessly holding things like CHIP and DACA hostage, like they horsefeathering have anything to do with each other. Head the criticisms off at the pass by making it look like you can fall back on blaming the other side for wanting sick kids to not have coverage, or wanted to "not pay soldiers/etc.."

What the Democrats REALLY need to remember to do when they take charge again is to grow a spine and set essential horsefeathers like health care coverage basically on autopilot so the Republicans can't periodically hold it (and them) horsefeathering hostage. Things like Medicare and Social Security are essentially set to run indefinitely; you set up things like food stamps and health care subsidies to come up for re-authorization in some kind of stupidly naive sign of good faith, gee, what the horsefeathers do you think is going to happen?

I do not understand the perception that the Democrats "caved" on this shutdown. I really don't. They got 6 years of funding for CHIP. And they basically gave up nothing else. There's less than 3 weeks until the government shuts down again and they've lost no leverage...they can still make the same DACA demands in a couple weeks.

Someone explain to me how that's a loss.

Because any threat to CHIP was completely made up in the first place, so now the Republicans can act like they "saved" it, and all the Democrats got was the gold standard of a Turtleboy non-promise that really only allows for them to double down on blaming the Democrats for holding the government hostage again just three weeks later over a bunch of job-takin' immigrants.

It all comes down to DACA, they shut down the gov't for a few days because of DACA and are no closer to solving it than before the shutdown.

But...what did they lose? They'll be right back at this in 3 weeks. Maybe they're no closer like UK said, but they're no farther away either.

I don't see how the GOP can claim any kind of victory on CHIP.

If they approve any kind of long term funding without DACA, then yeah...that's a loss...a huge one.

Because it was successfully framed as the Democrats holding CHIP hostage over DACA, and now the GOP can sell it as they saved CHIP and gave nothing in regards to DACA. The Democrats "lost" in that they gained nothing out of this and will have to do the whole thing over again in 3 weeks, and likely won't gain anything then, too.

Plus how they stupidly made CHIP a 10-year program to begin with so they could make it a bipartisan thing.

Jon Edwards did the same thing. They tried to bring charges and they were tossed. Our campaign finance laws are for horsefeathers.

The tricky tortoise strikes again...

https://www.politico.com/story/2018/01/23/mitch-mcconnell-russia-obama-joe-biden-359531?lo=ap_a1

Joe Biden said Wednesday that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell stopped the Obama administration from speaking out about Russian interference in the 2016 campaign by refusing to sign on to a bipartisan statement of condemnation.

There's no doubt in my mind that the entire leadership of the GOP had prior knowledge of Russian interference to help Trump.
