Also I know the source is “AG Conservative” twitter account but it was in the comments from the Fed NYTimes reporter. Both the senate and house bills have a provision like it, it looks like. Sooo, idk.

As the coronavirus upends American life, Chinese-Americans face a double threat. Not only are they grappling like everyone else with how to avoid the virus itself, they are also contending with growing racism in the form of verbal and physical attacks. Other Asian-Americans — with families from Korea, Vietnam, the Philippines, Myanmar and other places — are facing threats, too, lumped together with Chinese-Americans by a bigotry that does not know the difference.

In interviews over the past week, nearly two dozen Asian-Americans across the country said they were afraid — to go grocery shopping, to travel alone on subways or buses, to let their children go outside.

This is very disturbing.

I wonder how bad a a Trump idea would have to be for the Republican machine to not go head over heels evangelizing it.

Like if Trump decided he was Thanos and half of the country should disappear, would we see republican talking heads go on TV talking about the virtues of an honorable death by jumping off a cliff?

Actively encouraging your voter base to die is an odd reelection strategy

The pessimist in me asks if they plan on needing voters to stay in power anymore.

Trump wants the country back to normal by Easter (April 12th). Holy hell this is going to be a generation defining disaster.

Realistically though, if Trump did a strict Italy style shutdown of the country immediately, and in the meantime we acquired enough tests and put together a strong plan to ensure proper testing once things started returning tomorrow (a la South Korea), found a way to create extra hospitals to at least cover some of the overrun (like China), and gradually over a 1-2 week period eased the nation back into normalcy (also like China), I think his Easter goal would only be a minor disaster. But none of that will happen and we could be looking at a horrific horrific tragedy that will be talked about for centuries. I'm clinging onto the fact that governors have the power to enforce statewide lockdowns and we can keep people quarantined for a longer period of time. The feds cant overrule a statewide shelter in place can they?

The states can't afford to pay out unemployment insurance on this scale without federal assistance. The feds could hold that over the states that "disobeyed".

Plus, the individual states would have to stop all interstate travel and commerce. Even if someone like Illinois managed to eradicate it while on lockdown, as soon as they opened up again the virus would take hold from other states. You can't be effective with local lockdowns when the virus is still spreading elsewhere.
