Also this: https://www.washingtonpost.com/investig ... UdoKJbcpxj

Louis DeJoy’s prolific campaign fundraising, which helped position him as a top Republican power broker in North Carolina and ultimately as head of the U.S. Postal Service, was bolstered for more than a decade by a practice that left many employees feeling pressured to make political contributions to GOP candidates — money DeJoy later reimbursed through bonuses, former employees say.

Five people who worked for DeJoy’s former business, New Breed Logistics, say they were urged by DeJoy’s aides or by the chief executive himself to write checks and attend fundraisers at his 15,000-square-foot gated mansion beside a Greensboro, N.C., country club. There, events for Republicans running for the White House and Congress routinely fetched $100,000 or more apiece.

Two other employees familiar with New Breed’s financial and payroll systems said DeJoy would instruct that bonus payments to staffers be boosted to help defray the cost of their contributions, an arrangement that would be unlawful.

Although it can be permissible to encourage employees to make donations, reimbursing them for those contributions is a violation of North Carolina and federal election laws. Known as a straw-donor scheme, the practice allows donors to evade individual contribution limits and obscures the true source of money used to influence elections.

Such federal violations carry a five-year statute of limitations. There is no statute of limitations in North Carolina for felonies, including campaign finance violations.

I'd say this violating federal law is grounds for a firing and an arrest, but who are we kidding. That said, this is a state law issue, so theoretically he's horsefeathers.

Apparently Bob Woodward has a book coming out the middle of September that has supposedly rattled Trump. It's called, "Rage". Woodword interviewed Trump 17 times for the book. I imagine there will be a lot retrospective review of Trump's contemporaneous statements about COVID and the results of his bungled attempts to handle the virus.

Always worried an incident like this will stir up irrational shark fears. They're already getting hammered by our habits. This is the first fatal attack in the area in over 60 years

Some interesting stuff in this NYT piece:
https://news.yahoo.com/trumps-billion-dollar-campaign-lost-120121777.html

Five months later, Trump’s financial supremacy has evaporated. Of the $1.1 billion his campaign and the party raised from the beginning of 2019 through July, more than $800 million has been spent. Now some people inside the campaign are forecasting what was once unthinkable: a cash crunch with less than 60 days until the election, according to Republican officials briefed on the matter.

“If you spend $800 million and you’re 10 points behind, I think you’ve got to answer the question ‘What was the game plan?’” said Ed Rollins, a veteran Republican strategist who runs a small pro-Trump super PAC, and who accused Parscale of spending “like a drunken sailor.”

“I think a lot of money was spent when voters weren’t paying attention,” he added.

There was also a cascade of smaller choices that added up: The campaign hired a coterie of highly paid consultants (Trump’s former bodyguard and White House aide has been paid more than $500,000 by the RNC since late 2017); spent $156,000 for planes to pull aerial banners in recent months; and paid nearly $110,000 to Yondr, a company that makes magnetic pouches used to store cellphones during fundraisers so that donors could not secretly record Trump and leak his remarks.

Current events! Shark attacks usually get followed with a weird amount of anti-shark reactions and dead sharks

I wonder why he chose this particular shark attack to express his concern. There was a fatal attack in Maine a month ago. It's not like they are super rare - it seems like there are a few every year.

A shark attack is most a symptom of the negative impact of humans' relentless pursuit of moar: overfishing, habitat destruction, rising ocean temps, rising acidity levels, microplastics, etc etc etc...They're a key player in the global ecosystem and, given their longevity as a species, a good measuring stick for the kind of impact our behavior is having on everything else probably maybe
