OK. So we are constantly making more stuff. That's what an economy does.

Money is the abstract number we use to keep track of the value of all that stuff. Changing the amount of money does not directly change the amount of stuff, it just changes the price of everything. When you maintain the gold standard, the amount of money is tied to the amount of gold. You can't add more money to the system outside of how much gold you mine.

Since we are constantly making more stuff, we need to constantly add a small amount of money to the total. If we don't, the prices of everything goes down (more stuff divided by same money = less money for stuff). The problem with this scenario is that now you have no incentive to buy anything today, because it will be cheaper tomorrow, and the next day. Your money constantly goes up in value. This creates less incentive to make more stuff, because nobody wants to buy it, because everybody's sitting on their money pile that gains value every day. Which means you need to lower your prices to sell the stuff you make, and you have less incentive to pay people to make stuff, so wages go down. Which means there's even less demand for stuff, so prices go down, so wages go down, so prices go down, so wages go down. It becomes a race to the bottom.

Literally the only people who benefit from this are people who horded a bunch of money/gold/whatever ahead of time so they get to gleefully watch their buying power spiral upward while society collapses around them. This is why the gold standard is so popular with libertarian horsefeathers, who cannot maintain an erection without the idea of becoming powerful in a collapsing society.

Adding money to the system, inflation, is like the little carrot in front of the hamster wheel that keeps it all running. With a small amount of inflation, you can't just sit on your wealth horde, you have to invest it to try to make it keep its value. You use it to build factories that make widgets, pay people to work in those factories, those people have money now to buy your widgets, which gives you incentive to make more, and the whole thing keeps going.

I think the only actual argument to the gold standard is that you'll never have hyperinflation. So basically every argument turns into "well I bet the Weimar Republic wishes they had the gold standard!". Yea and I bet the Weimar Republic also wishes they didn't have crushing war reparations too. Maybe we can put in protections for hyperinflation with smart policy and not rely on the collection and storage of a random element.

Kind of ties in with the business themed posts above - when you sit back and consider it, just from a pure business standpoint, racism is completely contrarian to success. Looking at people as resources why would any good business want to limit it's pool? More people equals more opportunity which equals more potential investors, employees, etc. which inevitably boils down to a larger flow of money. I'm probably being too simplistic however, I believe there's some truth in this thought.

I know it is not going to happen, but in 2021 the new congress and President Biden should get a commission together to build laws so a Trump-style Presidency can never happen again. it benefits both parties equally and is in the best interest of the country. Only then would I support not going after Trump for Federal crimes.

I would love to know if Trump and those around him know how he is going to be viewed by history. I mean, he's going to go down in history as one of the worst rulers ever. Right up there with Caligula, Richard II, Ivan "the Terrible", and Leopold II of Belgium. His response to the pandemic alone will put him in that class, but all the narcissism and malfeasance will put him near the top. I suppose we should be thankful that he wasn't like Pol Pot or Mao, but perhaps that is only because of our system.
