How soon before all the Republicans who think that sticking with Trump = getting Trump voters in the future will realize that those people won't vote for anyone except Trump (or if Trump isn't on the ballot)

I've been waiting for this frankly. Take your medicine, get rid of Trump so all the GOPers & centrists can sigh, go back to regular order, and back to the quiet racism. "Orange man gone! The GOP is ready to govern again!" And it will work. All the "move on, turn the page" people will get their wish.

YUP. Back to saying the quiet parts behind closed doors, nothing to see here

Impeachment/removal should be like when NCAA violations are announced and wins are vacated. Like we just reset everything to what was going on before <someone> took office.

I, for one, will celebrate if Trump is actually kicked out of office. I think people are grossly overestimating the "republicans will suffer no consequences" portion of the story.

Let's say that you had three even-odds wagers with a friend of yours.
You placed 1000 bitcoins at even odds that Trump would not remain President for his entire elected term.
You placed another 500 bitcoins that the Democrats would regain control of the House.
You placed yet another 500 bitcoins that Trump would not be elected President in 2020.

Do you like your wagers, as a whole, at the current time? And if you do, what do you think would be a fair amount of money to offer your friend to pay you to make all the wagers go away? (In gambling terms, what do you think the EV (expected value) of all of your bets combined is?)

I'm on a 2k freeroll. Fingers crossed!

I hope you're right. I wasn't around for Watergate, but it's hard to not recall history at a time like this, even while acknowledging "times have changed." I hope the "lessons learned" mean more than, what?, 24 months of the GOP in the wilderness.

Same here, banning him from future federal office is key, sure they'll be some huff and puff from some of his horsefeathering idiots. But, I'm certain McConnell' thinking face some horsefeathers now an opposed to what further damage Trump could do if allowed to hold federal office again.

...did you already own 2000 BTC at the time of the bet? That's $2 million+ in 2017 prices and over $67 million at today's price, unless you're saying $2000 worth of BTC and I'm misinterpreting.

I think it may stop their bleeding. But if stopping their bleeding is where Dems win statewide races in GA by 1-2 pts when Trump is off the ticket, that's a pretty seismic shift GOP has to work back from.

If they gain ground from that we maybe set the clock back to like 2008.

Do you think if Trump is removed and banned from federal office he could really be in a world of horsefeathers? We were saying he won't face any legal repercussions whatsoever but, does being removed mean open season Trump?

It was dollars and I was trying to make a joke that it was a hypothetical bet, and it just made everyone confused. I deeply regret phrasing it like I did, but not nearly as I deeply regret ditching the few bitcoins I had (VERY early on) back when online poker was something I did a lot of.

(Edit: the amount of Bitcoin I had at my peak is now worth...I can't even type out the amount. It makes me ill. But I will tell you that the first well-known normalish transaction of bitcoin was a guy who bought a pizza from Papa Johns for 10,000 bitcoins in 2010. It would be worth 338 million right now.)

Because that’s how Washington works. You extract concessions when you have something valuable, all apologies to Blago.

If you want 17 senate Republican votes to convict and bar from future office, what are you willing to give them for it?

The ability to pretend they had nothing to do with Trump

yeah the idea that the GOP is in any position to negotiate is laughable. the opportunity to make a last ditch effort to distance yourself from trump is the best and final offer. horsefeathers off to negotiating DC statehood or a censure or whatever. get bent.

And this is why Trump always survives. Everyone agrees he's an existential threat to the country right up to the moment they might have to use some of their own political capital to stop him. Then it's "Well, screw that, it's the other guy's bill to pay."

Then he's the Republican nominee in 2024 and wins.

All it took to move the GOP was for their funders to start taking their money away.

Not surprising.

Reading between the lines of another tweet, Rodney Davis of IL sound like he could be a flip. Come on IL Republicans, be the leading state for R Impeachment votes!

It’s stupid because result matters way more than process in something this serious, but technically I agree with Pence. The 25th is for medical issues, and “can’t stop criming” is not the same as incapacitated. Impeachment is the appropriate tool.

I've noticed lately a disturbing trend among numerous professional class friends and colleagues I know. These are educated upper middle class types whom I've never noticed to be overtly political i.e. never noticed them posting about politics on Facebook in the past, yet suddenly they sound like the worst kind of raving Trump QAnon lunatics. The only unifying thread about these people is that they are all people whom I would classify as evangelical Southern Baptist types, so my only assumption is that they are getting this horseshat from the pulpit.
