Oh, I'm thinking the MRA's fedoras are especially jaunty this morning

A German actress, using the pseudonym Emma Loman, filed a federal lawsuit in Los Angeles on Monday, alleging that Weinstein raped her during the Cannes Film Festival in 2006. She is suing Weinstein for violation of human trafficking laws, assault, battery and false imprisonment, according to court documents obtained by CNN.

The "redemption" narrative that's out there for him and other famous dudes is so stupid.

"People, PLEASE. I know we caught Gary jerking off into the refrigerator in the break room multiple times, but we HAVE to let him back into the world of air conditioner repair. It's only fair that he be welcomed back to where he did what he did, and that we all just try to move on from this thing that he kind of acknowledged but didn't really apologize for."

I'd pay $500 to have him write his definition of 'serve his time'. The dude made millions of dollars AFTER jerking off in front of a couple young women who he had a ton of power over, got forced into a half assed apology years later, used the aforementioned millions of dollars to go on vacation for nine months, and now comes back to doing the same horsefeathers he did before....though oddly, the king of making light of his own worst qualities failed to bring this part of his character up during said comeback.

this question isn't really in direct response to the CK reappearance, but is there a sufficiently acceptable rehabilitation for a public figure with a problematic past? what would that look like

That's pretty broad.

But actual apologies and contrition would be a start. To even bring up "rehabilitation" like guys like this are doing anything besides taking perpetual millionaire vacations is also really skipping quite a few steps, too. He didn't do anything except stay away from the scene where he abused his power to do awful things.

The only thing more depressing than reading the dudes in the comments on Michael Ian Black's hot take is clicking on them and seeing how many are staunch liberals.

This isn't the first seriously idiotic thing Michael Ian Black has said regarding the metoo movement, so he can horsefeathers right the hell off now.

the broader point he was clumsily getting at doesn't seem entirely incongruous with a leftist position like prison abolition / restorative justice; Current Affairs ran a podcast a little while back discussing if demanding firings for transgressions is the right praxis, and Briahna Gray basically made this point, that it's kind of inconsistent to demand permanent public exile in these situations if you're also opposed to carceral state

Except that that hasn't happened. Nobody has been publicly exiled.

CK’s cautious reappearance comes at the same time as the latest in a series of Page Six stories about Matt Lauer’s hopes of reappearing on TV. The former NBC host was accused of a truly disturbing series of violations, including reportedly locking a woman in his office— via a special button he’d had installed under his desk— and sexually assaulting her until she passed out. (“I’ve been busy being a dad,” he reportedly told a group of well-wishers recently. “But don’t worry, I’ll be back on TV.”) Aziz Ansari has quietly begun performing standup again after a much-criticized Babe.net story about a woman who said he made her feel sexually pressured during a date. After flatly denying his own series of sexual harassment allegations, actor Jeremy Piven—whose TV show was canceled in their wake—has begun making a stab at a career at standup comedy. Mario Batali and Charlie Rose and Garrison Keiller: they’re all looking for a way back in.

At worst, these people all are getting a little vacation. None of them have had to endure anything other than a PR hit. There's been no real consequences. Certainly none that measure up to what would happen to a non-famous person that perpetrated the same acts.

Hinging a wobbly question about the punishment-free "redemption" of uber-privileged dudes like this on the larger issue of how our justice system is more prone to punishment over rehabilitation of people with a fraction of the means and power of someone like CK or Lauer is....certainly a position someone could take.

I get the intention behind #3, but the most tangible thing someone like Louis CK can do to make the workplace where did this safer or better is for him to not be in that workplace. I see people suggesting things like he should be trying to help women comics in the comedy world, but that's the exact context he used to do this in the first place. The inherent problem is he abused that position of power and trust.

Matt Lauer needs to be beaten with a crowbar, not beamed across the airwaves & satellites to millions.

Plus putting the onus of redemption or forgiveness or whatever the horsefeathers on the victims or people calling them out is completely backwards; the guys busted for this horsefeathers should be the ones working their asses off trying to figure out what, if anything, they can do to redeem themselves in some way. To just go away for a few months and then show up, throw your hands up and basically go, "well, I'm out of ideas; let me just go back to doing my old job" is the exact opposite of them trying to redeem themselves in any way.

They sure found plenty of initiative when it came to cornering women with their remote control doors and weird requests to jack off in front of them with the implied promise of career help or harm; it's weird how all of that ingenuity and drive just disappears when it's not about them being a horsefeathering horrible creep. WEIRD.

Twentieth Century Fox was just days away from locking picture on “The Predator” when an urgent note came in: Delete the scene featuring Steven Wilder Striegel.

Striegel, 47, didn’t have a big role in his longtime friend Shane Black’s reboot of the sci-fi thriller — just a three-page scene shared with actress Olivia Munn.

But last month, Munn learned that Striegel is a registered sex offender who pleaded guilty in 2010 after facing allegations that he attempted to lure a 14-year-old female into a sexual relationship via the internet. When Munn shared the information with Fox on Aug. 15, studio executives quickly decided to excise him from the movie.

Striegel served six months in jail after pleading guilty to two felonies — risk of injury to a child and enticing a minor by computer. The first role he landed after his release was in Black’s 2013 film, “Iron Man 3.” Three years later, he got another part in one of the filmmaker’s projects, the crime caper “The Nice Guys.” In 2016, Black told GQ that he was planning to produce a heist film “by my friend Steve Wilder.”

Black defended his decision to cast Striegel in a small part in “The Predator” as a jogger who repeatedly hits on Munn’s character.

“I personally chose to help a friend,” Black said in a written statement to The Times. “I can understand others might disapprove, as his conviction was on a sensitive charge and not to be taken lightly.”

But he said he has long believed that Striegel was “caught up in a bad situation versus something lecherous.”
