Time and Turning 50

Postby CubinNY » Wed Jun 20, 2018 5:59 pm

Next January I will be 50. I'm finding that time seems to be going by faster and faster. The year is 1/2 over already and I don't know where the time went.

I know there aren't a lot of older people who post here, but I'm wondering if anyone else is having this experience.

Thought title was Tim and turning 50 and assumed you had questions for our leader's experience when that happened 10'years ago

We should have a site Battle Royal, last man standing gets it. Everyone must wear jorts as their outfit.

The older I get, the less time I have both conceptually in realty. NPR had an interesting podcast on getting old that talked about this. The concept of “not having time” to do unwanted or foolish things.

so to tie a couple of these topics together...

Im only mid 30s but im in the same boat where it's just insane how fast things happen now. i was thinking the other day wow ive been acting like a dick on this site for 15 years, and I realized that one day my daughter (and my son, who will be born this fall) will be like dad what are you typing on, and ill have to say oh it's this message board that i started going to when i was in college about the cubs.

and they'll say what's your name on there, and then suddenly they'll be able to look up all the dumb horsefeathers ive posted here over the years. NICE

I'm only 34 but life has gone so much faster than when I was younger. I remember my first job out of college and it would be like 3 in the afternoon and I would think that 5pm was still soooo far away. Now it hits 3pm and I think 'meh the day is basically over, might as well surf the internet for a bit'

It depresses the horsefeathers out of me that it will only go faster (at least my perception of it). I think I saw something that by the time you are 35, like 80% of your life is over based on your perception of time passing (I'm estimating the numbers, can't quite remember the exact ones but its something like that)

In September, my youngest daughter will be a teenager and the older daughter will get her driver's permit, so yeah, time is a bitch

Yeah, the whole acceleration of perceived time as each moment becomes smaller in proportion to your life is a bitch and definitely not something I was warned about.

The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

Time dilation, as it’s called, is indeed terrifying.

I’m only 35 and it’s horrible. Must be truly terrible in your 70’s or 80’s.

Other than Fred, do we know of any other members that have passed away?

I'm 38 and get what you're saying. I talk about it with my friends, it felt like an eternity from HS graduation to the 10 year anniversary but 10-20 happened almost immediately! 4 years is nothing now and high school felt like it was forever.

However, I think older people have an appreciation for making it through and life satisfaction seems lowest in your 30's and 40's and much higher later in life. I guess it really depends on the life though.

It's a hard slap in the face when people your age start passing away from things besides car accidents or suicide. I've had people I went to high school or college pass away from cancer, alcoholism, etc.

I'm hoping to retire/capitalize on real estate investments at 50, 8 more years to go.
