Do you get your flu shot?

Postby Sammy Sofa » Thu Oct 18, 2018 2:36 pm

If not....why the hell not?

I'm distressed at the sheer number of people in my office who say they don't get the flu shot for a variety of awful, awful reasons. Please get your flu shot (unless you're one of the very people who can't or shouldn't for valid medical issues).

Yes, but this was my first time getting it. Have a one month nephew who had spent a couple days in the hospital for a high fever and we were all spending a weekend together and his mom insisted we all get one. I can't remember the last time I had the flu, so I never really thought it was necessary, but that kind of reasoning (and the article below) pushed me to doing it. No side effects or anything, going on a week later.

Had to tinyurl it because there's a swear in the URL...it's a Deadspin/Gawker related site.

pure laziness. If I'm somewhere giving a flu shot, I get it, but that has happens about 2 times in the last 5 years.

I've never had one. My wife and son have gotten it a few times during other doctor visits around that time of year. I couldn't tell you the last time that I, or anyone in my family have had the flu. Not that that's a good reason for not having gotten one.

I just rarely go to the doctor...I don't get sick very often, so it just never occurs to me to get one.

Yeah, even if you don't manifest the symptoms, people can carry the damn virus and give it to others if they haven't had the shot.

Please get your flu shot, folks.

Good news! It's super easy and cheap to get a flu shot. Tons of pharmacies/drug stores/minute clinics/supermarkets offer quick and easy (and often free) flu shots, and a lot of them will give a gift card/credit to the store, too. Your workplace might offer flu shot events, too.

Please get your flu shot!

I had never gotten one, mostly out of laziness, but I was at the doctor a few weeks ago and he's like, "Want a flu shot?" and I'm like, "Sure."

Didn't feel any side effects.

The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

I got mine just last week and just like every other time I get one it led to me getting sick about 2 hours later and spending the rest of the next day and a half sleeping and feeling otherwise miserable. I'm starting to wonder if it's even worth it.

I stopped going to doctors when I stopped needing to for sports related physicals and whatnot, and I've been incredibly lazy about getting one but I am planning on getting one this year.

The fear of side effects, or "getting the flu" from the flu shot, are big sticking points for people.

A lot of people do feel rundown or a little sick the day they get a flu shot, or even for 1-2 days after. This can be for a number of reasons! It can psychosomatic; it can be that the person was already sick and the symptoms are only now manifesting themselves or getting worse, or the person is focusing on them because of the shot; it can be your body's defense mechanisms reacting to the shot and doing its damn job.

Or, hey, maybe you DID get sick! It happens a lot from just being in some kind of medical facility, and having to get a shot on top of that. That said, most people end up with some sort of cold. And colds, as we all know from experience, can feel pretty lousy. The worst cold, however, is not the damn flu. If you've ever had the flu, or been around someone who's had the flu, you know this. The vast, vast majority of people who say they got sick because of the shot, or "got the flu even though they got the shot," actually just had a cold(s).

And people who got the shot can still get the flu; it's never 100% effective, but even when it's not ideally effective (like last year's, which I think was only around 20-30% effective because they guessed badly which strains were going to be most pervasive), it still improves the odds that you won't get it, the people around you won't get it, and it can help mitigate the symptoms if you do get it.

Please get your flu shot! Herd immunity is only truly effective if enough people participate. At the very least, do it for kids and old folks, who are most susceptible, and for the people who can't get a flu shot for actual medical issues.

This is probably the most common line of thought that leads to people not getting it (besides "I never get the flu"), and it's scary as heck because herd immunity only really works if enough people get the shot.

Just look at it this way: as cruddy as you feel for a day or so after the shot, the actual flu is SO much worse, lasts much longer, and has a good shot of landing you in the hospital or urgent care.

Do you live near a CVS?

Walgreens?

Does your grocery store have a pharmacy?

Odds are they have been offering flu shots for free or very cheap (plus gift card/store credit!) for at least a couple weeks now. No doctor visit needed!

The only thing that is keeping me from getting one is I hear old people are susceptible from it so I'd rather see it spread.

my work has a little health center in the building and they give out free flu shots on certain days. i saw this thread and was reminded to check on when those days were, but i found out i missed them all. but then i just walked down there and asked if i could have a flu shot and they gave me one!

in conclusion getting a flu shot will be easy for you too but possibly not this easy but still do it anyway.

It was terrifying how quickly the office talk veered into a couple of guys, who I would have never guessed this of in a million years, talking about how don't want to vaccinate their kids because they "don't know what's in them," or, "can't trust people putting that into my kids," and at least a couple other people just nodding along and agreeing.

We're doomed.

Guys, unless you get your flu shot, my followup thread is going to be, "get your first colonoscopy before the age of 40 like I just did," complete with pictures. DON'T THINK I WON'T DO IT.

Doctor: You don't really need a colonoscopy sir.

Sammy: *10 minute diatribe on the medical value of colonoscopies*

Doctor: Fine, if you'll just shut up!

You left out the part where I kicked the door down even though I had a scheduled appointment.
