TV Finales

Postby Sammy Sofa » Mon May 20, 2019 2:27 pm

So...a big one just happened. People have opinions! It certainly seems like there is much debate as to how well everything was wrapped up.

Which got me thinking about other TV finales, and which ones are considered busts and which ones are thought of as having stuck the landing.

So let's have it out there; which series ended with a whimper, and which went out on top?

I think if we want to be topical, we need to rank the worst endings to a series. Off the top of my head, I can think of three that were worse than GOT, in order of horribleness:
1. Dexter
2. The Prisoner
3. Lost

And I'm really only including shows that were, at one point, good. Other than the above three, I can't think of anything as disappointing as Throne Game.

I've long held off on watching Battlestar Galactica because of how much the ending seems to be hated.

How I Met Your Mother went from a show I loved and worried about it being not renewed to being a show that was on the air for 4 seasons to long. The finale was awful, insulting and a microcosm of the root failure of the show by being a slave to the title of the series for no reason.

The Leftovers was incredible, absolutely incredible. Probably my favorite ever.

I think I'm in the minority but I liked Lost's. It provided great emotional closure even if it probably fell a little short narratively.

Endings are really tough, so I'm usually pretty willing to let things slide. I can't think of a ton of shows' endings I hated that where I hadn't already gotten given up on the show a while ago (e.g. Dexter)

Breaking Bad was the best. I also thought The Wire and The Shield had good endings. Sopranos deserves mention as well since it was so unique. Lost was far and away the worst. Not even close.

can't imagine if the first 4 seasons of dexter hold up 10 years later. a buddy of mine called it "silk stalkings meets graphic violence" and that's hard to disagree with.

Funny. After Lost I refused to watch anything made by its writers, and guess what show Lindelof went on to create after the debacle that was Lost?

Fell a little short narratively?! That's a TOUCH generous. But emotionally...you could have replaced the final episode with interviews of the cast being sad about the show ending, and it would have had the same emotional/narrative scope.

Is there a show that had a bad finale where the show wasn't already in a decline?

I remember somewhere reading an article where they said that shows that have a definitive ending with lots of closure don't do as well in syndication. This was kind of a long time ago and I'm not sure if that still applies given the success of shows like Friends on Netflix. I think the list of bad series finales is a much longer list. Here's a couple pretty bad ones that haven't already been mentioned:

St. Elsewhere: The whole show turned out to be the imagination of an autistic child.

Roseanne: The last season of the show was a story that Roseanne had written.

Where would How I met your Mother fall on the list of disappointing finales?

Getting away from the frequently mentioned, The Shield had a GREAT finale.

Star Trek: Enterprise had a terrible one (even though the show had been really on a roll until then).

Just be like me and blame everything bad about Lost on Carlton Cuse.

I haven't seen it since it aired, but I feel like the finale was another episode of a show that wasn't at the level of the first couple of seasons and then it's final minutes took a big swing and for me I remember liking it but at worst it's an eye roll.

That's a mistake on your part. BSG for 95% of the time was as good as it has ever gotten for a TV show.

I'm stunned you've not watched GOT either, which is also as good as it has ever gotten for about 85% of its run.

My two favorite TV shows ever didn't get proper endings due to cancellation, so it would be unfair to rank them in any list.

ROME and Deadwood.

With ROME they literally had two make the final two episodes be what would have been the final two seasons. It was ludicrous.

Breaking Bad had a great ending. I did not hate The Sopranos finale. The Wire's end was solid. I didn't dislike Seinfeld's as much as I probably should have. Game of Thrones sucked ass.

I forgot about Rome. Very regretable.

I watched The Shield after it was airing as a new show, and I was surprised both at how much I liked it, and that they stuck to the great ending they went with. You know the temptation must have been strong for them to try and figure out some kind of redemptive ending.

The whole fake swearing thing is a big hurdle for me to jump over. It's a relatively superficial criticism, but it's a BIG pet peeve for me trying to get into that show.

With both of those I watched the first few episodes and they just never stuck. I certainly didn't think either was bad; quite the opposite, actually. I thought they were really, really well done shows that just didn't click with me. BSG really was the fake swearing (if there is a fan edit out there with real swearing dubbed over the goofy future slang, I would be all over that), but GoT was a combo of me just never really being able to get into fantasy, plus it just left me feeling too damn depressed after each episode (which is also why I gave up on The Bridge). Like, I don't think either show is bad at all; it just takes a lot for me to really stick with fantasy and sci-fi TV series.

I was just about to say, I think The Americans might actually be my favorite final season/episode ever.

And sorta hot take: I think Deadwood's 3rd season finale actually worked great as a series finale, too.
