Damn. Is that 25 calendar days or school days?

Calendar. Spring break went from 1 week to 3 weeks. Makes sense to me.

Considering the built in spring break, yes that's not too bad (also my wife works in a school so I'm continued to think in days as school days, and 5 weeks would definitely seem excessive).

I just wish we had our horsefeathers together enough to provide resources to families who have to cover that missed school time now.

Michigan governor announcing the closure of all K-12 school buildings through April 5.

My older son is 3 and attends ECSE, I imagine that will be wiped out too.

Ehhhhhhhhhh...extensive testing with mice is something that would add weeks onto the process, not months. Obviously we want a working vaccine as fast as possible, but it's unfortunately very arguable as to whether its wise to do something like this.

This is a good breakdown of the troubles with rushing a vaccine:

https://www.statnews.com/2020/03/11/res ... l-testing/

Long story short: mice aren't really susceptible to these types of virus, and you need to bio-engineer ones who are.

The trouble is, your average lab mouse doesn’t seem susceptible to the new virus. While the bug behind Covid-19 has no trouble co-opting molecules on human cells to get inside and start multiplying, it isn’t so good at latching onto the mouse equivalent. Although Graham can say the response produced in everyday mice looks similar to one that helped mice combat the virus in their bodies when infected with MERS, he can’t yet say the same thing for the new coronavirus, because the mice susceptible to this pathogen aren’t ready yet.

These pathogen-susceptible rodents were specially engineered in the wake of another coronavirus outbreak: SARS, in the early 2000s. To make them easier to infect, scientists adorned their cells with the human molecule that allows certain coronaviruses to slip inside. But when coronavirus research slowed between outbreaks, scientists couldn’t justify the expense of keeping many of them; so while these mice seem to be susceptible to the new virus, too, there aren’t currently enough for experiments to start.

“Those mice in the U.S. are being bred so that the colony can be enlarged,” explained Graham, adding, that they “will be available for experiments within the next few weeks.”

Colorado's drive-up testing site is already swamped by people showing up with doctors' notes/orders to be tested:

I found this discussion thread pretty interesting:

Obviously, it's a ton of speculation, but some interesting points are raised about how this virus arguably needs specific sets of societal and environmental circumstances to really explode like it has certain areas. There's no good explanation as to why Seattle isn't MUCH worse off at this point already and at least headed to something the looks like the harder hit parts of Italy or Iran or China. The Diamond Princess cruise numbers, as a sample size, also don't make much sense, either along these lines.

Long story short: it's VERY contagious, and can be very deadly, but it needs the right mix of population demographics, close quarters living, intimate greetings (think more hugs and kisses on the cheek than just handshakes) air quality, weather and super spreader events to really run wild. It just really emphasizes how critical testing and social separation is.

Maryland Public schools will be closed for 2 weeks. Governor Hogan also issued an executive order banning gatherings of over 250 people.

I already knew about the human-mice from that fantastic, in depth interview on the Joe Rogan podcast.

Sanjay Gupta just dressed down a government health administrator on CNN. It’s very bad news when these reps are sent to be on TV to spin rather than to inform

If all the preventative measures work and the toll of the virus is mitigated Trump is going to take credit for it and MAGAs are going to say it wasn't that bad in the first place. That's the issue with prevention.

I can find a dark cloud in any silver lining.

MAGAs are already saying its not that bad. Why would we care what they think anymore at all?

I'm just seeing it this morning. I think it was one of his assistants a couple days ago that tested positive that started the calls for Trump to get tested (since he was at Maralago with Trump and Bolsonaro).

China's you mostly can at this point. Iran is definitely a large relative blank spot (though even the projections that are available/guesstimated are horsefeathering terrible, so it's not like they're skewing the numbers into thinking it's some kind of rosy picture, especially since a lot of the attempts at tracking set aside Iran when possible precisely because of this problem), but again, it's obvious they are getting slammed by it, and as said before, it makes it puzzling why we don't see other areas getting hit even remotely as hard besides Italy.
