We do customer service for a fairly large fashion retailer. You’ve heard of us.

I hate it here.

Absurd that you cannot work remotely. You have a phone, laptop, and internet right? If so, you can do any customer service job away from the office.

It’s awful. When we had the polar vortex last year, my boss decided last minute that our office would be closed... but they couldn’t just pay us for the day, we had to use PTO.

They also expect us to write up employees for looking at their phones or wearing sports logos in the office. They don’t block any websites but if an agent is caught looking at Twitter or Facebook we gotta write them up for that too.

It’s horrible.

I know someone that went to that same meeting in DC. Now...I'm extrapolating from what I have heard from a lot of different people and things which are starting to not seem like a coincidence, and I am starting to believe that if the Feds (read Trump) do not take action, local and state governemnts are just going to coordinate shutdowns between themselves, and that a date has already been set.

I can’t even imagine the effect that a 2+ week lockdown will have on the economy. Totally understand the necessity, but really concerned about my job and my financial state 6-12 months from now. Am I overreacting?

Nope. As someone that runs an independent consulting company for manufacturing companies...it's going to be brutal.

I think that is a reasonable concern for anyone to have. What happens when 2 weeks stretches to 4, or even longer? The economic impact is going to be massive, but what is the alternative?

This place is literally in the backyard of where my wife grew up. Her Aunt still lives there and plays bridge, but because of prior commitments, she did not attend.

In a group text chat with friends and many of them are getting the same rumblings of a nationwide shut down.

My significant other works for a university hospital in Brussels and has let me watch their daily 8am briefing (by video stream) the last couple of days. They are preparing for the worst. If this gets as bad as they think it will get, the economy will be the least of our worries.

National lockdown destroys the economy for weeks/months/years or risk the pandemic spreading either slowly or exponentially while trying to save the economy so that the worst-case scenario appears with respect to hospitals being overrun. There’s no really good solution it seems apart from some sort of miraculous dying off of the virus which no one expects.

He's been going around licking doorknobs. The pneumonia will have to be punishment enough.

It's going to be brutal on everyone. I don't think a total shut down will last longer than a month. If we are still in isolation to slow the spread after a month we have much more to worry about than the economy.

For all the (well-deserved) focus on hourly wage workers and whether or not they'll be getting paid sick leave during this crisis, I haven't heard any talk of self-employed and "gig" workers. For us, there is no safety net. There is no paid sick leave. There's just customers who have (rightly) shut down work with any outsiders or end customers no longer ordering services.

A lot of freelance/gig workers have some safety nets. I've seen a ton of links being shared on Facebook, etc. for resources for these workers

My wife is trying to run meetings from home, while I'm trying to watch a faculty retreat via webinar, and it's a total nightmare. People don't know how to use their horsefeathering devices, microphones/webcams aren't working, the administrator is fumbling through the presentation.....ugh

The CDC's website had some kind of a cyber attack yesterday evening. Sounds like a DoS attack.
