I was just thinking I should go out and get something just in case, so I won't have to go if I get sick. I get a cold/sore throat about once a year and that's about it, and I usually just take DayQuil. Google is showing me that it looks like it's main ingredient is acetaminophen.... so just picking up some of that and I should be good if I get it at a level where I don't need the hospital?

DayQuil and Tylenol use it as their main ingredient.

Basically you want to have cold and flu stuff around to manage symptoms, whether it's the virus or not. There's no bonus points for trying to tough it out, and being able to rest and sleep are by far two of the best things you can do to get better, and medications like this ideally let you do that.

From a friend in lockdown in SF Bay area. Has violent symptoms, but still can't get tested.

What is with all of the "violent" talk?

I feel bad for them, but if he was detailing the same symptoms to a health care professional, yeah, they're probably not going to test them since testing resources are limited. Stomach issues and runny noses are actually key things that point to it not being the virus because statistically so few of the people who test positive report or observed having those symptoms.

Not that they shouldn't be able to be tested, but, yeah, the collection of symptoms they're describing don't sound like the virus.

We should not bail out these mfers. They should go bankrupt and be replaced with a public solution.

That's what so much of these horsefeathering tax cuts and whatnot resulted in: horsefeathering buybacks.

Hope this goes away in the summer, but then I will spent the whole summer petrified that it comes back 1918 Influenza style where it returns 10 times worse, and starts killing perfectly healthy people in their 20s and 30s

It could totally come back if we go back to acting like it isn't around, but this isn't the flu, and there is no reason to worry about it suddenly killing people with stronger immunte systems. Cytokine storms are not its MO.

Small nit pick (and I'm guilty) but can we stick this thread to just the scientific updates and formal announcements and put the bailout/politics thoughts in the politics thread? Like getting just the essentials in this thread and not wade through random political tweets and the like.

I mean, cytokine storms ARE a problem with it, especially in older folks, but yeah, that's more of a byproduct as opposed to the 1918 influenza, where it was kind of operating by design that way.

Does the fact that Florida has Covid-19 cases mean that heat/humidity may not be the savior we want it to be?

No; nobody should be looking at the summer as some kind of savior that will make it go away on its own, or at all. You can get a cold or flu in the summer, and you can get this in the summer, too; the key is that a combination of factors in higher heat and humidity seems to help limit community spread. Hot places are still vulnerable to travel spread, same as anywhere else, but then once there, it's looking more like it spreads slower than in cooler, less humid places.

Obviously, the understanding of all of this is a work in progress, but people need to temper their expectations; the summer will likely just serve to reduce the the R0 (reproduction number) maybe "just" something like 0.5...but with something as contagious as this, that makes the long term spread by a single person with the virus potentially reduce by the hundreds.

R0 explanation here:

Cases are starting to explode in Birmingham Alabama. One of the drive-through test sites had to be closed because traffic was backing up the highway. I sent a staff home today who had a temperature. We are closed for two weeks, starting tomorrow.

It's been over 80 degrees here for over 2 weeks and that's obviously not slowing it down.

Again, it doesn't work in a vacuum; all the talk of heat/humidity helping is with the idea that other steps are being taken to mitigate spreading. Louisiana is just taking those kinds of steps now, and the vast majority of the cases are in New Orleans. As mentioned before, summer weather doesn't stop travel spread; most of its impact is with community spread.

Nobody knows for sure. It seems like it's not really reliable to be able to test until symptoms start, otherwise there's a too good a chance for a false negative.

That's why the advisement if you've been around someone who tests positive is that you isolate yourself ASAP as much as possible, note the last time you had contact with them, and then see if symptoms show up. If after several days you develop at least a bad cough and fever and weakness, call your doctor or hospital or clinic and advise them of the situation, and they'll ideally tell you what needs to be done to get tested. Don't just show up.

It’s very hard to get tested. You need
-respiratory symptoms and/or a temperature AND known close contact with someone who tested positive
-Respiratory symptoms AND a temperature AND travel to a known region in the past 14 days
-Fever AND SEVERE acute respiratory symptoms requiring hospitalization and other tests (ie influenza) negative

There are exceptions to this. A friend got tested with some symptoms and recent travel to NYC, but his wife works for the hospital and probably got some strings pulled. It’s not nearly as easy as it should be.

In May of 2009 pharmaceutical companies started making a H1N1 vaccine. By November it was being administered. By “making a vaccine,” does it mean all the initial testing was completed and they moved to the manufacturing side or did they just make the H1N1 vaccine from beginning to end a lot faster?
