It is truly fascinating to see what items at a grocery store that people have stocked up on and which they haven't touched. There was a lot of non-perishable items (or long shelf life items like crackers and pasta) on the shelves, but perishable items like lunch meat and milk were completely wiped out. Hoarding perishable items (and, ultimately, having them go bad) is very stupid

It's not a few people hoarding unrealistic amounts of perishables; it's EVERYONE coming in at once to get the perishables they usually need, plus maybe a little extra.

Herd mentality. Even as bad as it has gotten in Italy the delivery trucks and vans are still restocking the stores. Grocery stores aren't going to be closing nor will the supply chain be effected that dramatically.

Maybe, but there doesn't seem to be great forethought in terms of stocking up on items that will last for a long time.

Or they are just restocking those things more.

I did notice that the eggs and milk cases were empty, but there was back stock on carts in the refrigerator room. They may be stocking items on a schedule

I also am hearing that people are filling their shopping carts with items and then realize it is a 30-45 minute wait to checkout and thus leaving their cart abandoned because they do not want to wait. Stores thus have to throw away the goods. This is coming from my 82 year old father in law who works for Meijer as a retirement job to supplement his retirement income

I assume this is a national thing since multiple chains around us are doing it, but stores here changed their hours so they can disinfect and then restock nightly. Some are doing a 'senior' hour at the start of the day where only older folks are allowed in, to minimize their exposure.

It's almost as if the less perishable items are easier to ship and store in greater amounts, my young Derwood.

All you dragon [expletive] out there can rejoice:

It sounds like the plot to a sci-fi novel but it’s not. It’s our lives. And while it’s obviously difficult to find bright spots in this sudden, scary new world, one may be coming from author George R.R. Martin. Martin, whose A Song of Ice and Fire series became the wildly popular HBO series Game of Thrones, was famously working on the sixth book in the series, The Winds of Winter, for the entire duration of the HBO show. The better part of a decade, in other words. Now that the show is over, though, his book still isn’t done—and the delays have long since become a running joke among fans.

And yet, now because of covid-19, Martin is observing a self-quarantine and spending the time, you guessed it, writing.

“I am spending more time in Westeros than in the real world, writing every day,” Martin wrote on his blog. “Things are pretty grim in the Seven Kingdoms…but maybe not as grim as they may become here.”

That chud is probably writing a history of boiled leather instead of finishing the stupid series

All this is due to a lack of leadership. People don't know so they are panicking. We have the preening clown show every day for an hour or so jabbing at the media and self-fellating instead of attempting calm things down. We couldn't have a worse person in charge.

i don't disagree with you about there being a lack of leadership, but even if we still had obama up there handling this as smoothly and leadery as possible, most of these people would still be acting like horsefeathering idiots at the stores. most people are idiots normally. throw a little panic in and this is what we get.

I've had luck shopping at my neighborhood corner groceries rather than going to the big stores, with shelves being fully stocked and shorter lines.

PRO-TIP: While the big aisle of bread and rolls was completely cleaned out, there were still loaves, buns, etc. in the bakery section

Unfortunately, those have about half the shelf life of mass produced bread. Bread freezes and thaws just fine, though.

Medical authorities in China have said a drug used in Japan to treat new strains of influenza appeared to be effective in coronavirus patients, Japanese media said on Wednesday.

Zhang Xinmin, an official at China’s science and technology ministry, said favipiravir, developed by a subsidiary of Fujifilm, had produced encouraging outcomes in clinical trials in Wuhan and Shenzhen involving 340 patients.

“It has a high degree of safety and is clearly effective in treatment,” Zhang told reporters on Tuesday.

Patients who were given the medicine in Shenzhen turned negative for the virus after a median of four days after becoming positive, compared with a median of 11 days for those who were not treated with the drug, public broadcaster NHK said.

Same, also the organic section by me was stocked with organic bread/bread alternatives (refrigerated/frozen) when the regular bread shelves were wiped out.

I'm so happy that Men's Wearhouse has a COVID-19 policy and let me know because I bought a suit (two actually) in 2011.
