Our intelligence community knew how bad this was in China well before it was made public. They knew and reported this information to Trump. He didn't listen. This is CYA and blame shifting. China is a totalitarian regime, but even they couldn't keep a lid on how bad it was. They simply disappeared the doctor who made it public.

The truth will come out someday.

I don't think any tinfoil needs to be involved.

While we're on the subject of tin foil hats, I have a weird feeling that this 100k-200k death range is a little overstated based on the effectiveness of social distancing, or at least is a total we aren't going to hit for a couple years, and so come election time when "only" 60k-80k have died, Trump can tout this huge victory on beating the 'optimistic' projections.

yes, this seems pretty obvious. we're in the gross position of having to root for a definite trump rallying cry to come true.

also, regardless of what happens, you can bet trump will be floating the 2.2 mil number for the rest of his garbage life as evidence of all the lives he saved.

I was just tipped off (by a colleague "in the know") that universities are asking faculty to make plans for remote teaching for the Fall :banghead:

It doesn’t have to be repaid under any circumstances. They’ll wire it to your bank account within 3 days of applying. I applied last night.

Also, they haven’t started accepting applications for this loan yet, but for self employed people you’ll be able to receive a loan that pays you a pro rated salary (if you make more than 100k you are capped at 100k for this formula). Here’s the great part: the first 8 weeks of this pro rated salary loan will be FORGIVEN. So say you put down that you made 85k last year, you can apply for 15k (2 months salary) and that will be forgiven as a “payroll cost”. My wife works as a policy advisor for the Senate and apparently in all the Senate emails they are saying that this is just Monopoly money and there really won’t be any true oversight. They’d rather just give away the money so long as it staves off a depression.

Thanks a bunch for the heads up on this. My wife and I both teach, but run a travel based adventure program for teens in the summer. We've cancelled this summer's programs, so I'd imagine we'll qualify.

Not a surprise, but it’s maddening that this is going to stretch out long past the summer.

And retention rate is going to go down the crapper. Why would any student pay $50k+ to get some online courses when they can go to a community college and do gen eds instead for a fraction of the cost? Small private schools are screwed

Most people should probably be doing this anyways vs spending $50K a year on undergrad.

Yeah, it's one of those situations where it sucks for the jobs impacted, but it sucks a lot more as a system in the first place.

Just because they're having you plan for it doesn't mean it's necessarily going to stretch well past the summer. It's a scenario that is very much in play at this point, so it would be dumb not to be planning with it in mind as a strong possibility, if not a likelihood.

Sure, it’s getting 100+ faculty members to come to a consensus about how that looks for the fall. There are about 6 or 7 different ways we can do this (synchronous, asynchronous, block, pushrod the school year by 1-2 months, etc, etc)

Yes, China is lying, but the US Government wants you to really focus on that to distract from their screw-ups.

Did they not issue a stay at home order because of his ignorance? If so, he should literally be jailed for that.
