That's unclear. It would be very weird for it to prevent you from having symptoms and have no effect on transmission at all.

Mainly it's him reading/hearing that the 90% refers to preventing 90% of the symptoms that is flat out wrong. Their claim is that it is 90% effective in preventing COVID-19.

I'm not entirely clear on what that means. SARS-COV-2 is the virus, COVID-19 is the disease. If you don't have symptoms, do you have the disease?

That feels like it's veering more into a philosophical question, IMO.

I'm obviously no expert, but nothing that's been given to us talks about this like it only prevents symptoms. All of the language talks about it like it is or compares it to the flu vaccine in terms of effectiveness. Yeah, preventing or lessening symptoms is one of the key things the flu vaccine can do (and one of the main reasons it's encouraged), but its main thrust is preventing you from getting or spreading the flu.

I'm just not seeing anything where it talks about the 90% number as if that's referring to the symptoms it prevents.

I'm basing this off of this twitter thread, which I posted here earlier.

I was a little disappointed with this one. Monoclonal antibodies look like they could be the absolute stuff when they've had some time to refine the process, but the first generation isn't that great. It's super expensive, rare, and doesn't help you that much if you're already really sick. So basically a few rich old people can get it as soon as they test positive but it doesn't do much for the rest of us.

According to the news item on Belgian television yesterday: all of it (the relevance being that a lot of those doses will be produced in the Pfizer plant in Puurs)

From his own state TODAY:

https://www.cnn.com/2020/11/10/us/el-pa ... index.html

Despite new measures aimed at curbing the spread of Covid-19 in El Paso, Texas, the community remains one of the hardest hit across the country, with soaring infections and hospitalizations that continue to climb.

County Judge Ricardo Samaniego said the county has requested four more trailers in addition to the six mobile morgues already on the ground to handle a spike in deaths.

"It may be as much as 20 per day the next two to three weeks. There might be more and more an incline of deaths," Samaniego told CNN affiliate KFOX.

That would certainly be great.

Deaths jumped to ~1,300 today.

My wife and daughters tested negative as well.

Seems like I was incredibly lucky. Multiple people at the small lunch that day have it and passed it on to their families. I certainly learned my lesson though...

Uhh, so the CDC just put out an announcement saying masks protect those who wear them.

I mean... duh? Was that ever in question, or is that simply something they had to say to try and shut up anti-maskers

I think the prevailing thought was outside of the best case scenario both person masked that the infected person being masked was much more likely to stop transmission than the non-infected person being the one masked. I think recently it's been found that a masked person is better protected from a non-masked person than originally believed... that my be the reason for the announcement?

Correct.

I feel like this is the 2nd or 3rd time this type of thing is being put out there over the past several weeks, though, but I guess I'm not gonna complain about raising people's awareness of it.

The thing I'm running into with students right now is that they don't think they should have to wear masks all the time because they've already had it (no idea if they felt sick and assume or actually tested positive).

I feel like they surely knew this long ago and should have made this guidance clear long ago as well. It’s just common sense, but any kind of shift in the guidance gives fuel to people to just throw up their hands and stop listening.

I get the "everyone's going to get it anyway" line. Or like you said, probably had it anyway or will get it, because there are lots of people around them who had it. Basically resignation.

Right. We are filming our dance concert this week, and there is a group of four women who all live together, are all in the same dance pieces together, and all, over the past semester, have tested positive for COVID. They're annoyed that we are still making them wear masks while they dance. I don't know what to tell them outside "it's university policy, so suck it up"
