ok, so, smart people, how optimistic should we feel that, between the vaccine widely available by april (based on what dr. fauci said) and another few months of infections unfortunately building up, next summer life will start to resemble normal?

i have tickets to two concerts next summer, guns n roses at wrigley in late july, and the hella mega tour at wrigley in mid august.

how likely is it that i'll actually be attending those shows?

god i feel like a selfish piece of crap even thinking about this, but it's unbelievable how many trivial-seeming things we are missing that ultimately contributed to our mental health.

I think things would have to swerve really wrong with the vaccines for next summer to not be massively different than this year.

Impossible to know for now (trust me, I'd like it to be different so I can get my festival kick next summer) - depends heavily on vaccine deployment (not just the Pfizer/BioNTech one but the others as well) which will be a massive logistical operation.

I agree with this, with the caveat that things like stadium concerts ideally should be about the last thing to come back, so some caution about that in particular should be warranted.

Btw David I don’t think that’s an overly selfish thought. Everyone is/should be making sacrifices to some degree, and being able to see an end point or a marker of normalcy helps to motivate people to keep going.

Not selfish at all. I work in the industry that has been nearly 100% shut down since March, and I want nothing more than to sit in a theatre or go to a concert (if only to know that my friends and colleagues are earning a paycheck again)

Did you seriously just spell it theatre? This is America, Jack.

I was appalled when I noticed AMC spells it that way.

That's the good way to spell it, not the British way

Movies = Theater
Stage = Theatre

Neither of that is technically accurate, but that's how and when I use them.

I'm in a fantasy league with some friends who have since moved all over the country. This week I was matched up against a high school friend who is now an ER doctor in Chicago. She had three inactive players on her roster. I've never seen her do this before. This is my new COVID index. Things seem bad.

My best friend is an ER nurse. He says that in the spring, while Covid was bad basically no one else was coming in so that helped keep it manageable. Now, they're getting slammed with Covid AND there's a near normal level of regular horsefeathers.

My wife and are trying to figure out if we should keep up daycare with the kids. Small at home day care, comprised of probably 10 or less families with many part time. There was a small scare as a parent tested positive last week, but the kid tested negative so they're not closing yet. If a kid (or teacher) does test positive they'll close for 2 weeks.

I have zero idea how to feel about sending our kids right now.

It's always bad when you get an email from work on a Sunday afternoon, but this one was particularly bad: a colleague from the IT department died from COVID-19 on Saturday.
He was a nice dude, always took time to explain stuff. :(

CDC Info on COVID-19 (Corona virus)

Postby Soul » Mon Nov 16, 2020 1:11 pm

Moderna is reporting 95% effectiveness. Their vaccine doesn’t require ultra cold storage, per Today Show. Fauci says strong possibility of first doses in December.

Other vaccines rely on same mechanism to produce immunity. We could be looking at even more vaccines available shortly. Certainly good news for your Monday morning.

The vaccine news just gets better and better, practically on a daily basis. Now if people can just act with some common horsefeathering sense for the next 4-6 months.

Life could return to a pre-coronavirus status quo by next winter, a co-developer of Pfizer's vaccine candidate told the BBC.

“If everything continues to go well, we will start to deliver the vaccine end of this year, beginning (of) next year,” Ugur Sahin, co-founder and chief executive of BioNTech, said on the BBC’s “The Andrew Marr Show” on Sunday. “Our goal is to deliver more than 300 million of vaccine doses until April next year, which could allow us to already start to make an impact.”

Great news, except for the millions who won't take it because their uncle on Facebook told them that the vaccine would turn their kids Mexican or something

Again, don't need 100% compliance (or even close to it) for this to be the thing to get us back. More than enough people will line up to get these vaccines.

Also, as the tweets from the politics thread over the weekend indicate, those most skeptical of a vaccine are probably more likely to have already been infected(and have some level of immunity anyway) than those eager to get the vaccine.

Has that changed? I thought there were reports that 50-60% vaccinated would not be enough?
