is it too late for you to hop in a car and get the horsefeathers out of dodge?

stay safe everyone, regardless

i have lots of friends and some family in florida so my anxiety is pretty high right now

Same here. Dad lives on west coast (Naples) 2 brothers live on east coast (Daytona Beach) and a sister that goes to UF. So while it's good the storm is tracking west it's also bad. Luckily my dad evacuated yesterday and is staying in Gainesville near my sister but the storm looks like it's going to directly hit his house. Scary stuff

i've always kind of wanted to live in florida ever since my family used to go to miami on vacation every year, and it's always been the first place on my list of places i'd move if i left chicago, but horsefeathers...

i'm not sure if dealing with this insanity every late summer/fall is worth not having to deal with a depressing soul-crushing 5-6 months of winter.

southern california would probably be next on the list, but they've got their own issues.

I wouldn't say every year. Before last year, there wasn't a hurricane that directly hit Florida since 2005. They have gotten the effects of hurricanes passing nearby and usually at least 1 tropical storm hitting the state every year but nothing that would be a significant risk for damage or evacuation.

That said, all it would take for me is one storm like this to swear off living in the state forever.

i'm surprised there hasn't been one since 2005 (incidentally, that year i went on a scuba boat out of key largo and we were the last boat allowed out before they stopped because of a hurricane on its way...so i remember it) but i realize ones of this magnitude don't happen often. but the threat is always there, and there's always a tropical storm season like you mentioned.

i have a lot of friends from that area. it's weird how overconfident they seem about it on FB. making jokes and stuff. if i were there, hearing about a storm potentially as bad as or worse than andrew, i'd have been driving the horsefeathers out a day or two ago.

Yeah, they consider Orlando the "high ground" of Florida

I lived in IL until I was 14 and then we moved to Boca Raton for 3 years and then over to L.A., where I've been since 98.

So far Ive dodged major disasters. Living in Florida it was weird every year hearing about the trop storms and hurricanes that were allegedly coming for us but they all ended up veering in another direction and petering out.

I can't stand the humidity there though. I sweat too much for that climate.

I do live in the valley above L.A. where it is 15-20 degrees hotter on most days. But I can handle the dry heat better than I can the muggy humidity.

Yellow line is the center of the eye of Irma, the house marked frank is my dad's house in Naples. He is not looking forward to returning and seeing the damage

My parents and extended family are all in Bradenton and Sarasota. Parents, brother, uncle, two cousins, their wives and 5 total children all right there. Luckily it looks like they're getting the more western side of the eyewall as it loses its intensity a bit, so I'm not worried about their personal safety, I think they'll all be fine where they are at, thankfully. They sound like they're in very secure and stable structures (Up to Hurricane safety standards and all that). I am concerned for their property (my childhood home), though, which is on waterfront property on Anna Maria Island, due south of Tampa Bay. Having that get ravaged would suck something fierce.

Inland LA summers and falls horsefeathering suck. You get crappy cost of living/property costs (sure, not as ridiculously expensive as the beach cities but it's not cheap out here) and traffic but you don't get any of the nice weather from living 3 miles from the ocean.

Just discovered this guy, Dutchsinse, who forecasts earthquakes

He predicted a 7 was gonna hit either Mexico or Taiwan the day before Mexico was hammered. He says So Cal can expect a 6-6.5 in the next couple of days.

So hope he's wrong

Crazy that it struck just a couple hours after their annual earthquake drill. That was a monster quake.
