Not quite snowing over here in OC, but the first thunder and lightning I've seen in the three years I've lived here. And the rain is so cold that my barely verbal kid started going "brrr brrr."

Scary ass video. Also fascinating how calm it is behind the tornado. The wind turbines actually stop.

Seems like the worst of it went north of us. Lots of rain, but no downed trees in my neighborhood

If you have a functioning backup, it's okay.

When your backup switch mechanism fails as well as the main burning out... Oh also you were planning on sleeping off a hangover from a rager of a Halloween party you just threw....

Prior to last week, we had played 2 softball games since May 2nd. We've had a ridiculous amount of rainouts, plus rescheduled games that were rained out. We had a game last night, it was a hot and sunny day but there was a very tiny intense storm at ~3:30 that flooded our field. It was hot and sunny the rest of the afternoon and when we showed up the folks with the city had decided not to rake the field, or turn on the lights or unlock the gate.

We've played 3 games since early May.

Ouch.

https://weather.com/news/news/2019-08-2 ... ng-strikes

At least five people were killed and 150 injured by a series of lightning strikes in a mountain range on the border of Poland and Slovakia Thursday afternoon.

"A large group of random people has been hit," Jan Krzysztof, chief of the mountain rescue service, told the Associated Press. "Many people, including children. Burnt, with broken legs, wounds all over their bodies."

Four of the dead were struck on a popular hiking trail to the summit of Giewont, a peak in southern Poland's Tatra mountains, the BBC reported. Officials think a lightning bolt may have struck a nearly 50-foot-tall metal cross and then traveled along a metal railing.

"We heard that after (the) lightning struck, people fell," Krzysztof said. "The current then continued along the chains securing the ascent, striking everyone along the way. It looked bad."

That reads like the script to the opening scene of an episode of Metalocalypse. Brutal.

"We don't even know what's coming at us. All we know is it's possibly the biggest. I have -- I'm not sure that I've ever even heard of a Category 5. I knew it existed. And I've seen some Category 4's -- you don't even see them that much," Trump said at a briefing with officials at FEMA's headquarters in Washington, DC.

"But a Category 5 is something that -- I don't know that I've ever even heard the term other than I know it's there. That's the ultimate, and that's what we have unfortunately," he added, in reference to Hurricane Dorian.

This is the 4th Category 5 hurricane since Trump took office.

It is bad, but the one silver lining is that Florida will be on the west side of the cyclone, which is much more favorable than being on the more violent east side. Surge should not be as bad as that unless it moves closer to the coast.

My girlfriend's mother lives on the east coast in Stuart, FL in a condo right on the water on the second floor. I've told her to evacuate even when it was a category 3. She is stubborn and refuses to leave. She's never lived in Florida for a hurricane season before. She's apparently extremely introverted and hates taking to people so going to a shelter is out of the question and driving to the West coast to stay with my parents who offered shelter is also not an option for her.

She's lucky theyre not getting directly hit (it seems), but man she's tempting fate even now. Storm surge is still going to be serious at a second floor level.

I would have evacuated Friday or Saturday if it were me, but reports since Sunday make it look ok for there. As long as she is prepared for no power for awhile.

There was a 50 car pills up on I-80 headed west around Youngstown, OH. I was stuck in the traffic waiting for it to be cleared as I was driving across the country moving stuff for my GF from NY to Chicago. We hit the traffic at 230pm. We started moving at 1:30am. Cops said at 10-11 they had both Lanes open but we didn't move for hours. Turns out, judging from the cop going up and down the side of the road blasting his spotlight and his sirens at people, that several truck drivers decided to go to sleep. So what should have been an 8 hour delay wound up being an 11 hour delay.

All the while we were just trying to get to a hotel 4 miles up the road.
