I've never seen the show, but I listened to the Carvey WTF somewhat recently. This was just a terrible network/timeslot match, right?
Pretty much; being on right after Home Improvement and premiering literally weeks after Disney bought ABC basically doomed it from the get-go, though, honestly, given the big primetime wars between the networks at the time and the types of shows that were thriving in those timeslots, it likely would have run into similar issues on NBC and CBS, too. Maybe it could have survived on Fox, but, bottom line, this shouldn't have been on in primetime.
The big missed opportunity is that HBO had wanted the show and Carvey was talked out of signing with them.
