Spy Game and The Last Castle are the two that jumped to mind for me without looking.

Obviously the actually computer technology a 1992 film centers around can't help but be dated, but when I rewatched it a year or so ago I was really surprised at how much the general attitude/philosophy about computers and accruing/freeing information seem even more relevant now than when the movie came out.

This scene has them sitting on a Cray, with the most 90's office movie decor and Ben Kingsley hair possible, but it's kinda now:

Warner Bros and DC are developing a feature film based around Supergirl, the heroine and cousin of Superman. Oren Uziel is working on the script

Shouldn't you be able to make a really good Superman movie before you make a Supergirl movie?

EDIT: Now that I think about it, her story is a lot more interesting than Superman's...maybe it'll make a better movie?

DC's whole double-dipping characters thing between their film and TV division is weird.

It was the DCCU's best movie till Wonder Woman. I liked it. But Superman is a bright, happy, inspiring character. Man of Steel never showed any of that.

I'll settle for a Superman movie that actually manages to take how much I love these...

...and successfully pulls off a full length flick that isn't a mess or depressing as hell (or both).

Wait, they already did?

Back in 1978??!

Yes. That plane rescue from Superman Returns is probably my favorite Superman moment in any of the movies...Reeves movies included.

The second part is a terrible take, but I've long kinda agreed with the first part to a point, namely that it's insane that a character who is basically a god at this point regularly has something, like, half a dozen comic series running at the same time (and those are just the ones he's the main character in).

There's tons of great Superman stories and arcs, but those usually work when they're effectively written as standalone stories, either intentionally or by default. The Ongoing Stories of God with a Cape have always ended up boring me because there's only so much you can do with a character week after week who can do everything. Which is why, IMO, he's should be perfect for an awesome movie...IF it's its own thing. Or if you're making 2-3 films, making them like the Nolan Batman films in the idea that you're telling a complete story. Trying to use him to launch a perpetual Bond-like franchise or a massive cinematic universe just doesn't work because he makes too much redundant simply by existing.

Which is why I edited my original post about the Supergirl movie. She's more interesting than Superman. She has actual memories of Krypton, so it's a different kind of immigrant story than Superman, who remembers nothing of Krypton. She's a teenager...because of timey wimey stuffs, she's now younger than her "baby" cousin...there's a lot more drama to milk from all of that...god powers or not.

I say they go with the post-Crisis Supergirl, who is one of the most ridiculous comic ook characters ever, even by ridiculous comic book standards:

Seriously, read her history and try to not think you're having some kind of a fever dream.

went to the 20th anniversary screening of blade at the brooklyn alamo drafthouse last night. i saw it twice in the theaters during its original run in 1998 and it still holds up. some stuff is dated (sfx, obviously) but casting wesley snipes as blade was a masterstroke. easy to say that without blade, there'd be no interest in comic book movies like x-men or sam riami's spider-man series.

per the moderator of the screening, marvel only made $25,000 off of blade due to selling the rights of the character years prior. after the movie's success ($130 million worldwide gross with a budget of $45 million), they started selling off rights of its characters for larger amounts of money which in turn helped marvel get out of its financial woes.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that it is going to add an award “for outstanding achievement in popular film.” What does that mean? “Eligibility requirements and other key details will be forthcoming,” according to the release in the Hollywood Reporter.

So...the summer blockbuster award?

Yeah, typical movie theaters are flooded with big budget stuff now and all the quality award flicks are in either limited release, big cities, niche theaters, or Netflix/Amazon. To be honest, I think an award for big-budget movies is actually kind of a decent idea since those movies basically only had one award to fight over which was best VFX. At the very least, it'll be a decently fun category.

Or maybe, SHOCKER, they finally stop acting like 95% of all comedies and action flicks are automatically disqualified from being nominated for anything beyond technical awards.
