I've yet to see the movie, but the book is easily one of the most loathed things I've ever read.

Both the book and the movie are fun, I never quite understood why it gets singled out so much by the people who want to scream "This isn't art!" into the void

Reviews are coming out for Vice and they are not good.

This makes it seem like a car crash that needs to be stared at

Yep...the book was a quick fun read, and the movie, different as it was, was a blast too.

I don't give a horsefeathers if it's "art" or not; I just thought it was a bad book.

I haven't read the book and went into the movie not knowing anything, but I loved it. Total blast. Typical to a lot of blockbuster movies in that the dialogue is a bit cringy in some parts, and I thought they could easily shave 20 minutes out of the middle, but it was loads of fun in my opinion.

I keep forgetting that it's a Spielberg film, so that explains a lot about how it could have been salvaged.

I'm not guaranteeing that you'll like it, based on the reviews I've read it's pretty polarizing.

But yeah, lots of Spielberg magic in there....

There were multiple instances where the movie took such wild, misguided swings that we audibly scoffed, including a twist involving Jesse Plemons as the film’s narrator that was so offensive I nearly walked out.

This has me so intrigued as to what it could be.

It looks like it's going for a similar vibe as The Big Short, and opinions are mixed on how well that translates to this source material.

Hell, it sounds like he's just trying to redo The Big Short altogether.

Like, the little asides and narration in TBS worked, IMO, because you were dealing with convoluted financial issues that were going to confuse a lot of people. This isn't that.

As a history teacher, I really appreciate the contrast of what WWI was like in the beginning ( the Cavalry charge) vs what it devolved into (the trenches at the very end).

Spiderverse might be the best movie I've seen this year. Going to have to see it again in 3d to see if that adds to the experience

One last RPO jab:

https://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/exc ... girl-stuff

EXCERPTS FROM MY UPCOMING NOVEL, READY PLAYER TWO: GIRL STUFF
by NAT SILVERMAN

“Wow, Felicity,” he said. My Internet name was Felicity, after the coolest American girl doll. “I never met someone who knew so much about Harry/Draco before.”

I laughed. “Thanks, Sasuke420, I guess not everyone is as serious as I am about the Classic Ships.” Then I turned on the best song, “Spice World,” by the Spice Girls. I saw his eyes go wide as he got my musical reference. He was a keeper.

“In a while, Totodile,” I said, which is a Pokémon.

- - -
“Damn it!” My rival, PhantomLuvR hit her screen in frustration. The only way through to the next level of the Tardis-Maze was by answering the riddle, but — “There’s no way anyone could know all the Backstreet Boys’ descriptions of their dream girlfriends!”

“That would be impossible.” I smiled sagely. “Unless you read Tiger Beat, issue 158.”

PhantomLuvR roared in anger and tore open her Labyrinth T-shirt, which was just a close up of David Bowie’s crotch bulge in those gray tights. What a waste; it was vintage.

I held a piece of pocky in my mouth like a cigarette. “Just so you know — Howie wants a girl with a nice personality.”

- - -
I ran a proud hand over the side of my spaceship that was shaped like a Lisa Frank dolphin. I had won it in a bet with my friend Snapewife over how many Pirates of the Caribbean movies there were. Back then, she had called it the Sparkleship, but I wanted a more intellectual, literary name. So I re-named it Astolat, after my favorite fan-fiction author.

“Good luck in there!” said Astolat. She had a voice like Amanda Bynes.

Actually, I think I'm on board if the "girl version" actually became a thing:

has anyone seen Bad Times at the El Royale? it's written/directed by drew goddard, michael giacchino did the music, and it has an awesome cast. i feel like this has to be some level of awesome, but other than the reviews (which are pretty good) i haven't heard anybody say a single thing about it.

I thought it was OK; I came away from it with this odd feeling like the whole thing was really forced. Like, it's so carefully constructed from the ground up: good cast, shot great, good score, classic noir setup...but somehow it just doesn't all quite fit together. There's nothing "natural" about it; it's like an AI-constructed version of a vaguely Lynch-ian neo-noir.

Picture a glossy, big budget version of a Max Fischer play.
