Pluto is fine if you don’t want to watch anything worth watching. the selection leaves a lot to be desired, but it is free so there’s that.

There's also a very strange channel with scantily clad ladies jumping and dancing around.

Pluto is almost like a real world version of UHF.

Between netflix, over-the-air (I've finally got my over-the-air DVR working), and Pluto I don't miss cable at all.

Wow, never heard of it before. Are there a ton of ads?

The ads are no worse than cable, probably a little less lengthy (if more repetative) but if you've been away from cable for a long time it can be very annoying. The channels like MSNBC are normally at least a day delayed. I tend to use it for the channel surfing experience, and the MST3K channel and the RiffTracks channel are my go-tos, but there is a lot of random fun stuff at any given time.

Yeah, I was basically sold on the 24/7 MST3K and RiffTrax channels alone. Everything else could be straight garbage and it would still be worth it just for those two.

Messed around with Pluto for like an hour yesterday. Got hung up on the channel with women in lingerie :D . It was much better than expected. Their on demand movie and tv section had some older movies that I would watch too. I saw Crash out there for instance.

Apple confirmed Monday that it plans to purchase the music identification and streaming service Shazam for around $400 million.

the planned purchase coincides with a rumor, also out Monday, that Apple is considering dropping music downloads from iTunes in favor of a streaming-only model. Per industry publication Digital Music News, Apple plans to make the musical shift sometime in early 2019, just after the lucrative holiday season. DMN said it confirmed the news with multiple sources at the company who spoke on condition of anonymity.

That will piss me off. But then again, I don't buy music like I use to.

Apple already makes it a pain in the ass to actually download the stuff you paid for. If they go full streaming, they can eat my butt

iTunes is a grotesque resource hog that anyone with a shred of common sense should have dumped a long time ago.

I really need to get on making the next 400m gimmick.

I only ever viewed Shazam as a novelty and horsefeathers like that just blows my mind. Kudos to its creator.

And yes, I'm so not with it that I didn't realize it was also a streaming service.

It's probably just a sign of my technological ineptitude, but your phone being able to listen to and recognize pretty much any song in the world remains one of the coolest things about smartphones, even though it's been around since iphones first started coming out. For everything else that my phone can do now, that one still blows my mind.

hey derwood, what kind of feedback have you gotten about this tv from your store? best buy and amazon are the only two places that sell it

https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/tcl/p ... -2017-p607
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/tcl-55-cla ... Id=5878705

the reviews are sparkling and apparently it's been selling like crazy. pretty much everyone agrees that the performance/features are comparable to much more expensive sets. the main knock on it has been that the uniformity can be horrible if you get unlucky, leading to a lot of people exchanging them. also, tcl is still relatively new to the tv game.

i was actually just going to get a cheaper 4k tv (since i didn't think i would be able to get into the hdr game at the price range i was looking into), but i am very tempted to spend a little extra for this, because it sounds way better than the faux-HDR 50 inch samsung i was going to get for about 450.

We bought a TCL a couple years back and most of our friends were so impressed by the quality/cost ratio that they all own TCL TVs now too.

FWIW, I absolutely love my HiSense 4K HDR 50" TV. It was $450 brand new at Best Buy almost 10 months ago. Iif anyone is looking at offbrand cheap 4K TV's, I can solidly recommend that one.

I bought basically everyone i know an amazon echo dot for christmas because they were so absurdly cheap on sale, but then i was like oh horsefeathers i didnt get myself one. So I got one of the nicer ones for my kitchen ... and man this thing is cool. And my daughter loves it, even though she can't quite work the voice activation, she knows what to do. I constantly hear "LEXA WHEELS THE BUS" or "LEXA OLD MCDONALD." It's cute. Anyway I recommend one if they're still on sale and you don't have one.

We got 4 google home mini's to go along with the regular google home we already have. We've been using the "broadcast" feature a lot rather than yelling around the house. They may end up being used for the alarm as well.
