show me an a-hole 3rd class passenger in that movie and I'll show you a unicorn.

I think second class passengers were also free from Cameron's villainy stamp. These two guys look alright (they are literally the only two second class passengers with lines in the entire film)

You don't remember old Rose, still a totally selfish ahole at 101, throwing something overboard that could have provided generational wealth to her family? Selfish old bat.

During the 1920s there was a slang expression for that, struggle buggy which is a car that's not quite big enough to have sex in.

A few weeks ago I posted this video that some of my students made for the Maryland History Fair: (To be clear, I had zero to do with this video)

Over the weekend, they won the state championship and so it's on to the nationals.

The entry fee for the Fair was $550. Their prize for first place was $40, split 5 ways. They weren't in this to win money but you'd think the least the state of Maryland could do was give them their entry fee back.

This is a pretty wild video. Guy wears a gopro at one of those full contact Viking battle reenactments that those maniacs out in Eastern Europe do. Very intense. When he gets hit by a spear at around 3:15, it illustrates what is described in most depictions of old warfare, which is that almost always a wound doesn't come from the enemy combatants directly in front of you.

Operation Barbarossa, the Nazi invasion of Russia, began today 75 years ago. It was the largest invasion force ever assembled with 3 million Axis soldiers. It was unquestionably the worst military decision ever made.

It also leads to one of the great "what if" scenarios in history: What if Hitler had not invaded Russia? Would the Anglo forces have been able to rescue Western Europe from the Nazi's? I think the potential answer to that question obviously hinges on one factor: would Stalin have remained neutral throughout the war had he not been invaded? I tend to think that he would have entered the war eventually. He was already in the process of totally revamping the Red Army after he saw how poorly they performed in Finland during the Winter War in 1940. At some point he would have wanted to use this newly revamped Red Army to his advantage. I imagine that he would have waited until the Anglo and Axis forces were really in the middle of a slugfest and then he would have jumped in.

Nevertheless, it's quite possible that by the time he felt his army was ready, there may have already been a truce between the West and the Nazi's, so the scenario of him taking advantage of a pre-occupied Third Reich would be moot if that were the case. I bring up the idea of a truce because I simply can't imagine what the battles in North Africa or Italy would have looked like if you added hundreds of divisions of Waffen SS troops into those campaigns and tens of thousands of additional tanks and aircraft. The Allies barely won those battles in the first place, so you add millions of Nazi troops to those battles and there is simply no way the Allies win any of those. It's more likely that those campaigns would never have even been attempted by the Allies if the full force of the Third Reich was occupying Western Europe and Africa.

By their own analysis they couldn't succeed without food production from Ukraine and Soviet Union. I think they started hunger planning cities that fed Russia prior to the invasion.

It's not the stupid decision it's made out to be. They had goals and needed their Lebensfood. You can only conclude that all of their goals were stupid but you can't isolate barbarossa.

That said, the Wehrmacht would have destroyed those theatres you describe. Perhaps even they could have had more success east of hitler allowed competent people to continue to plan and run the operation like halder.
