Nevermind violence overall (war included) is essentially at its least lethal compared to almost any other point in human history, and had been steadily decreasing at the same time as people were generally become less religious.

Obviously not THE factor, but I doubt that's a coincidence.

I mean how many wars thru history were waged mainly or at least in part because of religion? Just about all.

That would depend a lot on what you mean by "at least in part". Religion was certainly at the forefront of many wars up to and during the 17th century but from the French Revolution on most wars are more about things like imperialism, nationalism and patriotism. The big exception being recent conflicts in the Middle East. But the three biggest wars in human history, WWII, The Taiping Rebellion and WWI aren't really about religion at all.

A more accurate way to say this is that governments have used people's religious beliefs to drum up support for wars that were already happening/ going to happen. I suppose that may seem like nit picking but they're not the same thing.

Definitely disagree with that statement.

"Religion" might be the aspect of tribalism that leaders prey upon to get their soldiers to fight for them, but I don't think religion is the purpose of most wars in history.

ANYWAY...what's really sadly ironic in the face of the idea that people need bajillions of guns to be safe from crime is that mass shootings are one of the few violent crime stats that have steadily risen over that last 20+ years.

I don't get them from Twitter though. I see them elsewhere, but then grab the Twitter link because its a better visual on this site. If you post a link, no one reads it. If you post the Tweet of the link, people do.

If I read a news story on NPR or CNN or wherever, I'll post the Tweet link here rather than a URL because it looks better.

That is the boilerplate GOP response to just about everything: If the Democrat's solution can't 100% solve the problem, then why even bother?

Replace 'gun' with 'abortion' and see how quickly these idiots do a 180.

a lot of complaints about the lack of gun control in this country, and the influence the NRA has over politicians. And rightfully so.

However, at the same time, I'm not seeing a lot of effort when it comes to gun control advocates supporting the opposing interest group: The Brady Campaign. NRA is constantly in the spotlight. The Brady Campaign I never seen a headline of.
