Just got an email from my daughter's high school alerting parents that the police took a student into custody this morning for bringing a hand gun to school. I'm thankful that they caught the kid (and who knows what his intentions were), but that's never a message you want to receive

^^^^^It's cool the police are so overtly supportive of people's observance of the Bill of Rights. I'm just curious what the exact quote would've been had they been asked about an upcoming Black Lives Matter gathering instead.

It's so quaint when gun-humpers get all worked up over the idea that "gun-free zones" are inviting gun crime. Like the horsefeathers who shoot up work or school or a theater or whatever would have been swayed from shooting up those places if there wasn't a sticker up somewhere of a gun with a red line through it; they horsefeathering targeted them because that's where there's a bunch of people they could shoot. That doesn't change if the odds are better that some of those people have guns.

Like, imagine how much denial you have to be to think that James Holmes, Adam Lanza or Dylann Roof would have been all, "naaaaaaaaaaah; I'm not going to shoot up a movie theater/elementary school/black church....there might be guns there!"

A lot of these end with them getting shot or killing themselves anyways so it's also not like they give a horsefeathers if a good guy with a gun is there. They're often going in with semi automatic rifles, they don't give a horsefeathers about a guy with a 9mm who might or might not shoot at them.

so my daughter has a classmate who dresses in black and brings razor blades to school, acting dark and depressing. My daughter is terrified, we are terrified. Outside of talking to the teacher and principal, what can we do?

7th grade

dresses in black and acting dark and depressing is something you ignore. Razor blades to school sounds a bit troubling.

the razor blade part scares me the most, but the dark and brooding and blades is accompanied by talk of cutting himself. My 11 yr old daughter is completely confused and terrified by it. At the least, I worry about his mental health and hurting himself, at worst I worry about him hurting others.

I would absolutely alert the principal or guidance counselor about it.

well, when you say "outside of talking to the teacher or principal", does that mean you have already done that or you want to avoid doing that? If my kid told me somebody was talking crazy and bringing razor blades to school, I'd contact the people at school.

if the kid is a cutter he can join the other probably 10 percent of the school that also does that. I know that's harsh but tell the principal, talk to your daughter's teachers and get them to talk to a counselor, but dont overreact. the kid needs help, not fear and ostracizing.

we've already done that, but I still have fear about the situation. Too much bad horsefeathers going around in schools, I don't want my daughter experiencing it

yes, I get that, but it's really hard not overacting. I hope in the end he gets the help he needs but what I cant tell is if he is doing this (bringing razor blades to school) to frighten other kids or if he really is cutting himself. That I couldn't decipher from what my daughter told us.

obtain peace of mind by looking through childhood
mortality data and reminding yourself of all the other ways your child is more likely to die than by school shooting and/or razor blading

Yeah...also, is it 10% of 11 year olds or 7th graders who are cutters now?

I'd have far better piece of mind if I knew the kid was getting help, for him as much as anyone.

I was 11 when I started 7th grade for the same reasons, so don't get your hopes up too high.
