Yeah, I love how funny ep7 and 8 are. The opening scene in 8 was a riot

also, the amount of hate over luke having a sense of humor/wisecracks is baffling to me. have these people never watched the original trilogy? he talked horsefeathers to vader AND jabba!!!

Everyone's cracking wise left and right in ANH and ESB; Star Wars fans are just miserable turds who yearn for these movies to be as miserable as they are. Y'know, the movies with space wizards and ghosts and lighting being shot from horsefeathering fingers are SERIOUS [expletive] BUSINESS.

You give them what they want nostalgia-wise and they hate it for just being what they've already seen.

You give them something new and they hate it because it's not enough like what they've seen before.

I really, really hope that this movie doesn't have a relatively precipitous box office drop thanks to these raving goons not shutting up on every internet forum available about how this blast of a movie annihilated their stunted, terrible childhoods. The last thing I want is Disney to get scared and crack down on Abrams to do something super safe for Episode 9 after this one blasted the possibilities of the whole thing wide open.

I honestly think all the Expanded Universe stuff just sucked the joy out of the story.

All the novels and comic books and what not that was considered "canon" before the Disney purchase. I've read some of it, and it's mostly very self-serious. I feel like the more you dig into and flesh out all the history and back story, the more the fans lose sight of the original story. It's like Sulley with Game of Thrones.

Of course they are. And even the video games (many of which I LOOOOOVE), are written without humor. The curmudgeons that Mojo is talking about are the ones who would rather have a KOTOR movie where everything depressing and heavy-handed than a young Han Solo buddy movie

Oh, I thought when you said "the story" you were talking about TLJ and I was very confused.

Yeah, most of that EU stuff is butt. I just want good SW movies.

it is really upsetting how much it pisses me off that mike mitchell hates this awesome movie and that i know he’s just going to whine and whine about how much he hates it on the next five months of doughboys.

Yeah, I meant "the movie story", not just TLJ.

Either way, the dissatisfied "fan-boys" can fall in a hole

Wow I loved it, much more than TFA

I’m definitely seeing it again.

Fan boys are the worst. If they hate something it’s a good indicator that it’s good.

The only part that didn't work for me was

Spoiler: show
The casino part. The theme worked - both sides are trash holding the underclass, who will never be free until everything is wiped clean, down - but it seemed insanely too hijinky given that Finn and Rose both knew there was like 6 hours until all their friends were exploded and dead. Like as soon as they land Finn is like woah sweet look how rad this place is.

Absolutely loved it too - and I’d definitely consider myself on the fanboy side of things (in that I consume far too much SW content for a 35 yo man).
Really at a loss as to why it’s getting a such a harsh response from the public, especially given the media response has been almost overwhelmingly positive.

I think they're mishandling Finn right now

Spoiler: show
Johnson used him almost exclusively as "guy who was a janitor but knows every detail of everything the First Order has ever done, has ever built, and will ever do in the future".

More than that though, his plot line didn't matter in the slightest. Nothing that he or Rose did affected the plot in any way whatsoever.

Spoiler: show
unless Del Toro's character plays a far more important role in the next movie. Or if you count her ring on the kid.

My beef is that that was the perfect setting to give us some sweet, sweet LANDO, and he was still nowhere to be found.

Though Del Toro was great.

The response from the public has been pretty positive overall; it's just the very vocal contingent of Star Wars obsessives that are split on this that are raising the biggest stink (and most of whom we still see it multiple times even though they "hate" it; it's crazy to me how often I'll hear people talk about how they had to see something like The Phantom Menace close to a dozen times....IN THEATERS....before they "realized" that it was bad. I saw that horsefeathers once and figured out an hour in that was something I had no desire to sit through again. These weirdos are convinced you need to see a Star War multiple times to really "get it").

The funniest thing of all is picturing what it would have been like if social media/the internet as we know it had been around when ESB came out, which got a HUGELY mixed reaction from fans and critics. It was a good decade or so after it came out that you finally had a lot of people routinely calling it the best of the original films.
