Baseball books

Postby Wittyalias » Sat Jan 30, 2016 4:44 am

I'm looking for a couple of good baseball books. Any suggestions? Maybe Bill James? What about Cubs' books?

I don't read a ton of sports books, but:

Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract
Ball Four by Jim Bouton
Clemente by David Maraniss
Moneyball obviously....

There's not many good Cubs books.

Right now, I'm reading The Best Team Money Can Buy by Molly Knight (about the last few years of the Dodgers)

The Extra 2% by Jonah Keri was an interesting read

Been meaning to read Up, Up, and Away by Jonah Keri (Expos), but I haven't dug in yet

Moneyball, obvi

I also read the Francona/Red Sox book a couple years ago just to get some of the inside stuff with Theo and the front office.

Everytime I see this title, I'm disappointed that it's about 1908 and not 2008. Except this time I knew it right away because you were posting it, haha.

The George Will book is actually pretty good.

One more question. Should I get The New Baseball Abstract or the original?

Jane Leavy's book about Sandy Koufax. Every other chapter is a game in which he pitches a perfect game against the Cubs. Some good quotes from Santo and team.

have you ever listened to their podcast? it is great anyway, but just the hints of stories they tell of their time doing this (they intentionally don't talk about it much) make me think the book is going to be great.

Love that podcast. If only because they usually sound like they wish they didn't have to do it, but are already on episode 800 something.

Just finished Up, Up, and Away. Really enjoyed it.

Next up is Crazy '08, after years of seeing people talk about it around here.
