Hawks basically being last year’s Bulls. At least there’s some interest in the Winter Classic game now

the lottery is going to be intense. we're going to be right there at the top and getting hughes would change everything.

There are a lot of really bad NHL teams. Philly, NJ and NYR makes the NHL completely pointless in the northeast corridor. Detroit still blows. Chicago and LA are bad. There are going to be marquee names at the lottery.

It's a good test of the mini rise in popularity the NHL has had (I think? maybe just coincides with my attention peaking w Hawks run).

We had 10 consecutive Stanley Cup Finals with at least 1 of Pittsburgh, Chicago, LA or Boston, and if you add the Rangers and a pretty popular Wings team, 14 of the 20 finalists in that period were one of those 6 teams. This year the division leaders are currently Tampa Bay, Columbus (tied w Washington), Winnipeg and Calgary. Boston and Toronto are in the mix too but for the most part its less popular teams.

For who though? You'd have to get a lot for Kane to make it worth it. What team could offer enough to make that trade worth it? I think you'd nee to get 2 top 6 forwards, a potential top pairing defenseman and a 3rd line center to make it worthwhile. That's assuming Kane would even agree to the trade which he doesn't have to do.

Unfortunately, that's never how NHL trades work. The Blue Jackets are potentially trading away a two-time Vezina-winning goalie and will be lucky to get a mid-tier player and a couple of draft picks. Now Bobrovsky is a UFA this year, while Kane has 4 years left on his deal (huge difference), but that's 4 years of a $10.5M cap hit for a player's age 30-33 years.

....thats pretty much what biitner is saying. Which is why Chicago is very unlikely to trade him

I guess the question here is whether the Hawks can convince him to come to America. The Kings seemingly couldn't. If he does sign, he's probably a better player than they could have gotten with the 5th round pick that they gave up. They've had recent success with European players coming over so maybe that helps?

yeah i jumped the gun on kane a bit because i just want him gone at some point. the reality is that we could go right back to being competitive within a couple years from now, and it makes sense to keep him until we get further clarification on the following 3 things

1) will they get panarin?

2) will they get one of hughes/kakko?

3) how good is bovqist?

getting good fortune in those 3 areas would make this team really exciting again

So these morons are ruining their chances in the lottery all for the chance to finish a couple spots back of a playoff spot.

The next ten games or so look really favorable (or at least relatively favorable, as the Hawks are still statistically worse than most of these teams). 7 of the next 9 at home, with only Boston (7th in the east), Columbus (8th in the east), and Dallas (6th in the west) as playoff teams. That stretch takes them right to the trading deadline (March 25), which works out perfectly. While it's clear Toews and Kane have been bringing it all year, I'm hoping that there's another gear for Keith (top pairing defenseman) and Seabrook (playable defenseman) that they can get to for a home stretch.

If the stretch doesn't go well, pack it up, hand the keys to Cam Ward, and see how far you can fall.

I was thinking yesterday about what the Hawks ought to do going forward. The "plan" had been to tank (or just be incapable of playing any defense at all) and hopefully win one of the top 2 spots in the lottery. The only problem is that they aren't going to draft a top pairing defenseman with that pick, at least not one that will make a big enough impact right away to contend within the window of Toews & Kane still being really good.

In the right deal, I'd like to see the Hawks trade that first round pick for a defenseman and then try to sign Mark Stone in the off season. It would have to be someone that will be around for a few more seasons and I don't have anyone in particular in mind.

It’s too bad STL is just as hot as the Hawks otherwise I might really be excited about potentially making the playoffs
