Week 1: Chicago BEARS @ Detroit Lions

Postby rawaction » Mon Sep 07, 2020 6:28 pm

The Bears start out with a "something's gotta give" type game. Despite their fanbase constantly clowning him, Trubisky has had most of his career success against the Lions. Three of his 7 career 300-yard passing games have come against the Lions. 23% of Mitch's TD passes have come against Detroit, including three straight 3 TD performances.

However, the Bears have not won a season opener since 2013....the first year of the Marc Trestman era.

This is one of the most important season openers in recent Bears history. An 0-1 start in what is supposed to be the "easy" part of the schedule, that comes as a result of struggling QB play would be a disaster and probably the start of a long season.

The QBs are gonna be who they are. Whether this could be a playoff season or a high pick hinges around the d-line staying healthy

I'll take the high pick honestly. But would we want Pace to make that choice?

I wanted Pace gone after last offseason. It is what it is at this point.

Detroit, always too dumb to play zone.

No Darius Slay to take out Robinson this year. Granted, Slay has been largely unsuccessful at that, but I do wonder if they'll get away from that strategy without him.....and doesn't look like Okudah is going to be starting for them.

The worst case scenario will play out. A 7-9,8-8, or 9-7 season that nets them no playoffs and a draft pick around 14-18.

sticking with the 100 year anniversary throwback (for 1 game) and not going back to the superior 1940s jerseys is a bummer

I was never a fan of the orange, but Akiem Hicks' love for and subsequent campaign to bring them back sold me on them. But they're still at the bottom of the list for recent alts.

I love the 100 year throwbacks. But I also love the 40s throwbacks, so I agree with this completely. I understand why they wear throwbacks at home, but I wish they didn't wear white at home ever.

I think I said this last year but I'd go:

Blue at home. Regular or 40s throwback
White on the road.
100 year throwbacks 1-2 road games per year (if possible)
White on white (jerseys and pants) in road indoor games

Either they are playing 9 road games or they’re stupidly wearing white at home for one

White at home works for early September home games when its 90 out, but other than that there is no reason for them

The injury report for this game is getting kind of interesting. I don't know if there's a bunch of gamesmanship going on but some major players missing or limited in practice the today and yesterday. Quinn and Montgomery's status appear to be up in the air, with Cohen essentially saying Montgomery will start; while Monty himself says he doesn't know yet. Quinn mysteriously missed time for personal reasons early in camp and was basically eased back the rest of camp, to now having an ankle injury. Mack was also on the injury report yesterday, but seems to be OK.

For the Lions, their top WR, Golladay is dealing with a hamstring issue and was limited today. While their starting RT, Vaitai, did not practice. Vaitai isn't a great pass blocking tackle anyway, but if he can't go their looking at a rookie RG next to Tyrell Crosby, a guy that started the last 4 games at RT who they very actively replaced in free agency with Vaitai. Crosby did start against the Bears in the first game last year, and didn't allow any sacks, FWIW.

Quinn is still not practicing, seems unlikely he will play Sunday. My doom boner is already raging majestically. I want this team to crash and burn completely, get everyone fired, start the rebuild.

The entire season rests on getting healthy, dominant seasons out of the key defensive players. We already lost Goldman. They can't afford to have any dropoff from Quinn (30), Trevathan (30), Hicks (30), Mack (29) or Fuller (28), and we all know that all NFL players except QBs wither away and die after their 27th birthday. The depth that helped a ton last year just isn't there anymore.

Somehow Pace managed to look at the crapfest that was the offense and do nothing except play the tight-end carousel yet again and bring in a QB who couldn't beat out our crappy incumbent. The offense has exactly one good but not elite player (Robinson), a couple of average players and a bunch of bad players. WRs are below average as a group, OL is below average as a group, both QBs are below-average starters. I can buy the argument that Montgomery is a secretly average back whose surrounding talent made his stats look awful, but he's not better than average. Cohen on his best days is a flex/tweener RB3 not a true second RB in a league where you need two real RBs, and his best days look behind him already.

The offseason was a monument to why you don't let guys have "save your job" years. Trading picks and committing big guaranteed money to 30-year-old defensive players. The cap situation still sucks next year now too.
