Rumors out of Jacksonville that Marrone is out and Urban Meyer is their top candidate.

Schottenheimer? This is madness. G'damn this loser franchise, just keep Gase and build the roster

The last time the Jets conducted a supposedly long and thorough search for a HC they ended up with Adam Gase...the time before that it was Todd Bowles (and McGM, who may or may not have secretly been a Starbucks exec)...

Edit: Belichick kinda sonned Gase in the second half there. Dan Campbell from the Saints, please! Or David Shaw from Stanford! Both!

Gase firing is official.

The really interesting coaching decision has become LA Chargers. They finished 7-9 on a 4-game win streak. Justin Herbert is the best rookie QB ever statistically, and the assumption is Lynn (an offensive coach) had some say in drafting and/or developing him. Lynn is clearly not a good game day coach, as his team has lost in miserable ways the last few years. But 7-9 with OT losses to KC and NO, a last play loss to Denver, and 7 total losses by 1 score is something to build on.

I'm not going to spend time looking up the actual numbers but doesn't it seem like the Chargers lose 5+ games by 1 score every single year, with a couple of those coming because of missed kicks? It's like how the Raiders always were top of the league in penalties each year regardless of the coach. Losing 1-score games seems to be something the Chargers just do.

Elway moving up to prez role and will hire a GM under him

I know this isn't generally the way NFL franchises operate but I think there's a chance the McCaskeys choose to go this way.

I assume you mean with an outside hire, not elevating Pace?

Baltimore is kind of like that now, but I think Ozzies title is like special advisor or something, which I assume will be the effect role of Elway.

Atlanta promoted their former GM to Pres, though I'm not sure if he's still involved in a lot of personnel stuff or it was a legit movement to the business side.

But yea, I think that's the extent of franchises organized in some manner like that currently. So it was all internal movements that led to some type of GM who has some higher football exec above them (not including cases where that guy is head coach too)

An NFL FO modeled like an MLB one? Noooooo...in 2021? These two sports acting so alike? Nooooo, no one could see that coming no no no

The Broncos started doing some interesting stuff under Elway so I'm actually interested to see who they hire. I really like how they blend top of the league athleticism and polish throughout the roster with guys like Miller, Gordon, Cushenberry, Fant, Albert O, Ojemidia, Glasgow, Chubb...I even think Lock was an interesting gamble and approach to maybe finding a non-first QB as teams shift away from giving that position all the power

Teams are shifting away from giving QBs all the power?

Anyways as to the structure, at the very least the NFL complicates it somewhat by having specific hiring rules for both the top level exec and top level coach jobs (both as it relates to access and the diversity requirements re:Rooney rule). So from the perspective alone it's a lot different since the NFL mandates some level of designation of roles whereas other leagues are seemingly a lot more informal and dictated more by unwirtten rules and protocol.

Anyways, its usually a matter of playing with titles, but you occassionally see some writer/bloggers offseason plan where they hire a super experienced President and also one of the hottest up and coming names as a GM candidate to be their GM, which just seems like detached from reality. Like, fine, propose some structure that no other NFL team uses, but be realistic about what type of profile is filling that GM role.

Yes yes yes, see Tennesse with Tannehill playing 3rd or lower fiddle to Brown, Henry, and two strong OTs...I'd say the Texans' offense runs more through Tunsil than Watson...the Ravens have been a top team for years without ever really relying on QBs until Jackson, who isn't a traditional QB...The Eagles won a Super Bowl, ran their whole playoffs, with the backup QB playing for their then MVP candidate QB...Brady's job in Tampa is to efficiently get the ball to Evans/Godwin and squad, the Saints give their QBs alot of outs, options, and protections, the Panthers do interesting stuff and need efficiency more than they need star power at the QB position...Mayfield, who in previous generations would have been dismissed on his size and college system alone, was drafted first more for relative certainty rather than star power...It's slow but steady and sure, the position seems to be moving more towards facilitator...Hell, even Mahomes walked into a ready built offense outside of QB, the 2016 Chiefs won 12 games with him only starting 1 with both Kelce and Hill looking excellent almost immediately...Russell Wilson's pretty much the only guy I see in 2021 as even having some throwback to him, relying largely on two outside WRs and chutzpah/moxie

OTOH I really do just talk out of my ass

Shaw and Douglas worked in Baltimore way back in 2002, but he's been a popular HC candidate around the league for a decade at least and it's always been no

I know this isn't how it works, but I'm going to be pretty pissed if Carolina only gets one 5-11 season out of Joe Brady before he gets taken away.
