I saw a tweet about a great Grobber moment...but in the middle of the Trump stuff yesterday I'd forgotten.

So good.

Lol, that's good.

One a similar note, Danny Parkins irrationally annoys me. I don't know what it is but he just does.

They asked Bosio on the Score this morning about Robot umps and he said it would slow the game down. Umps would constantly go under the hood to review a ball/strike call. I don't think he understands the concept of having a "robo" ump call balls and strikes.

It's a Jorge Soler situation. Looks like they should be amazing, but not so much.

Man so many good posts on robot umps in this thread lol! That pic is awesome. I've been a HUGE proponent of an automated strike zone or some technology that can accurately call balls/strikes and takes away that part of the game from stupid, subjective error-prone human Umps.

I really hate ... I'm just going to say it -- there are a lot of crackers in MLB (coaches and players and FO executives) that are just resistant to change and anything progressive. Like I'm not so sure Bosio or someone of his ilk wouldn't say something idiotic about integration back in the day, and how letting minorities play baseball will change the game dynamic and fan/player interaction or something stupid like that... I've lost a TON of respect for Bosio this year, and he needs to stop making stupid comments and focus only on discussing pitching/pitcher mechanics.

Does anyone know how Theo and/or Jed feel about an automated strike zone? Obviously, Maddon and Zobrist are open to the idea (which is awesome).

Rosenthal going to The Athletic: https://theathletic.com/86701/2017/08/2 ... -athletic/

He'll still have TV/Video stuff with MLBN/FoxSports, but his articles will be on The Athletic.

The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

The Athletic is pretty great when you finally cave for it. I still can't believe it's doing as well as it is though...really didn't think their business model would work in this day and age but they obviously knew what they were doing.

i may be completely wrong but i think the price came down considerably and was insane at first, which was my main issue with it.

When the list price was higher it was also really easy to find discounts. If I had to guess I'd say that eventually the price increases since they're subsidized by VCs, but the exact equilibrium is hard to tell.

The cost is $7.99/month now unless you do the $3.49/month full year. $8 is crazy. $5 is a fairly common cost for random monthly subscriptions of various content. If you can get 10,000 in each market to subscribe at $5/m, that's $600,000/year in revenue.

Here's a bit from the Forbes article on their last round of financing:
What is most compelling is that The Athletic needs a bit less than 2,000 subscribers per team per market in order to break even, according to Founder and CEO Alex Mather. He also said that The Athletic, which was launched in January 2016, has reached thousands-of-subscriptions already in both Chicago and Toronto despite only being eleven months old in Chicago and one month old in Toronto.

In the first year, it did quite a bit of discounting around the model. But The Athletic is bringing in six-figures in revenue, according to Parikh.

"We are really focused on profitability," said Mather, distinguishing his company from most startups that prioritize growth over profits. "It will happen in Chicago absolutely in 2017. There's a better-than-50% chance that it happens in Toronto as well."
