has anybody written that it's actually good that the US squad has a chance to clean house and start fresh and stop trying to squeak into the second round and getting beat by some other nothing team?

Donna was partially responsible from turning around Wisconsin sports from complete garbage to one of the most consistent athletic programs in the country through her hires/vision.

Wasn't she at University of Miami for their last football NC?

I know she left our chancellorship in the 90's for somewhere in Florida so that sounds right...

I don't mind the look at the entirety of US Soccer(because honestly what else is there to do), but I feel like there's a bit of an insinuation that missing the world cup was because of some talent problem and therefore we need to deepen the pool, make high level soccer more accessible, etc. Those are all noble goals that should be pursued, but they aren't why the US didn't qualify. Our back line, probably the weakest part of the team, has multiple starters from the EPL, Bundesliga, and Liga MX in the pool. They have the talent to qualify with relative ease while missing half their best 11.

Definitely. There's two conversations going on at once. The best way to develop talent for the national team and this particular failure. Sunil Gulati isn't necessarily wrong when he implies that this team missing the world cup was a matter of a few inches here and there. This team was more than capable of topping qualification like Jurgen & Bob's teams did from a pure talent perspective. This team would have probably gotten out of their group and had a chance to win a knockout game, just like very US team since 2002. But as long as we're going to miss out on the big show, we might as well use it as an opportunity to address what has caused the complacency, because we shouldn't be fielding teams with similar potential 15 years after 2002 when the rest of the american soccer landscape has progressed light years from that time.

Looking at that graph, it translates to what I see where I live. The less expensive it costs to play in a league, the worse the instruction is going to be. The better competition is playing on travel teams which are a huge commitment of both time and money. This system does produce talent but it effectively excludes the exact type of talent that just about every other country fosters and develops.

A day later, there will still be a World cup, just not with the USMNT. 23 nations have qualified so far, two for the first time. The draw happens next month, but we know the draw pots will all be seeded, and the rankings are set. So, the pots are as follows for the known qualifiers:

Pot 1:
Russia (host)
Germany
Brazil
Portugal
Argentina
Belgium
Poland
France

Pot 2:
Spain
England
Colombia
Mexico
Uruguay

Pot 2 or 3 pending remaining results:
Iceland
Costa Rica

Pot 3:
Egypt
Iran

Pot 3 or 4 pending remaining results:
Serbia
Nigeria
Japan

Pot 4:
Panama
Saudi Arabia
South Korea

U17's about to make the quarters of the World Cup, demolishing Paraguay 5-0 so far.

All goals:

Carleton, Sargent, and a hat trick from Tim Weah. That second one from Weah is a wonderstrike(0:26 on the video).

Weah's second was a banger, but judging from those highlights alone, Carleton had himself a monster game. That ball to Sargent was sensational.

England next. That will be a test. I know zero about this u-17 team, but they've been cranking out some great youth teams lately.

I would really love to win this tournament. I think it'd go a long way to show what we can improve on what we have rather than blowing everything and starting over in youth development. I think we can make major changes that are important without rolling back the clock.

On one hand, it sucks to see another round of an owner holding a city hostage for public stadium money. On the other hand, it probably paves the way for Cincinnati's expansion bid, and Texas is probably more capable of supporting 3 teams than southern Ohio is of supporting 2.

The ball to Weah for his third was no joke either. My low key favorite is the first goal though, between the distant crowd noise and the way it played out it looked like something out of an older FIFA video game.

Columbus is pissed about this (predictably), especially as an original member of MLS. I haven't followed the team too closely, and don't remember much press about ownership asking for a new stadium, especially a "downtown" venue (besides, Mapfre Stadium is within spitting distance of downtown as is, with parking and easy highway access. )

The more I read about this Crew story, the scummier the owner comes off. He never asked for public funds, he purposely got a clause in the sales contract in 2013 giving him the ability to move to Austin, and as of today, he's refusing refunds to fans who bought 2018 season tickets

Check out the Austin Aztex attendance numbers while they existed in the USL.

A true statement probably in every sport at every level.
The problem, Reyna says, isn’t a lack of coaching — it’s players having to navigate U.S. coaching egos which might care more about results than player development.
