Big day for MLS last night as Toronto and NYRB knocked two Mexican teams out of the CONCACAF champions league. Considering prior to last night that has happened all of two to 3 times ever, that's a strong showing.

Seattle can make it 3 tonight also.

Seattle has a 1-0 advantage heading into the away leg and are probably playing the worst team of the 3, so they have a decent shot. Although for reasons that aren't quite known, Lodeiro didn't travel with the team.

Lot of action in both games too. Toronto vs America will be interesting.

Would you say no to Wenger taking over the Nats for the next cycle?

Yes, I would say no. National team managers can't be slaves to style.

I'd like to listen to all the Americans bitch about a French guy leading the team.

A rather roundabout conversation at work about sports terminology led me to googling soccer kits, and I came across these NFL soccer kit fan designs...which actually aren't half bad...

i'm going to my first fire game this weekend. pretty excited i get to see guzan. went to the same high school as him and haven't seen him live since the state playoffs in like 2002.

i don't follow soccer. is anyone on the fire particularly worth paying attention to?

Schweinsteiger and McCarty play central midfield and are both quite good. Schweinsteiger because he used to be one of the better players in the world and is now on the downside of his career, and McCarty is a fringe national team player. Their target forward Nikolic is a good goal scorer. I'm not sure if any of their new additions are doing anything noteworthy, or if any of the above guys are dealing with injury.

Atlanta has a more interesting roster. Their attack with Almiron, Martinez, and Nagbe is very, very good, and they're just now getting to incorporate their big signing from the offseason (Ezequiel Barco) too. Those four as a unit are as good as it gets in MLS.

Liverpool again appear to be making a move for Pulisic and maybe United and Arsenal.

thanks for this, by the way. Schweinsteiger seemed to be in the middle of everything and directing much of the traffic for the fire (and definitely a fan favorite--nearly every jersey i saw around the stadium had his name on the back). can't say i noticed mccarty quite as much, but again, i don't really follow soccer so my eye is very much untrained.

Martinez scored one of the goals for Atlanta. the two halves felt like different games. the first half was more of a defensive struggle, and in the 2nd half, it felt like both teams were getting right to the goal. and guzan is just a beast. i don't have much frame of reference, but he had at least three diving stops and 2 plays where he just jumped over a pile of players for the ball. and he was extremely vocal out there. very fun to watch.

i was surprised with the energy of the crowd at the game. having never been to one, i was expecting a pretty sparse crowd--something like a weekday afternoon for a 2012 cubs game. it wasn't packed to the gills or anything, but it felt like a pretty good showing and it was a lively crowd. definitely would like to get back out there.

Do they want to try to move Chicago Fire there? Are they trying to turn this team into an MLS team?

MLS games are pretty fun, they're the closest I've seen to taking the college sports atmosphere/pageantry and translating to pro sports. And the Fire are among the weaker gameday environments in the league too.

That's certainly not going to help the conspiracy theory among Fire fans that their absentee owners want to move the team.

DC United dropping the better part of 20 million to add Wayne Rooney is...exactly the type of thing that will keep them at the bottom of the league

I'm frankly intrigued to watch a soccer player without the ability to run.

Silver lining of missing the world cup, picking our roster and starters given the injuries and lack of form would've been a nightmare! https://www.starsandstripesfc.com/2018/ ... t-decision

Nah. Other than keeper and striker, that's as in-form and talented a team as we usually go with.

My main takeaway from that video is that the Galaxy affectionately call their USL team Los Dos, and that angers me deeply for reasons I don't entirely understand.

Imagine being in a USL market and watching Los Dos eliminate your team in the playoffs.
