It's pretty crazy that within like 2 months of taking the job, Theo made a trade that will eclipse any from Hendry's tenure, including a few that were really horsefeathering good.

The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

You weren't elated when they traded Jake Fox and Aaron Miles for Jeff Gray?

horsefeathers Jake started, I think, the same game that my going to Cubs games-losing streak started, and he managed to ruin what was part of my brother's bachelor party when a bunch of us bought a ticket package to the Budweiser Patio, so I feel confident in saying that all of my enjoyment of going to a live Cubs game has been forever cursed because of that bearded bastard. Go suck a butt, Jake.

Losing Jake has me more emotionally bummed than losing Dexter. Maybe it was because Dexter went to the Cardinals so the hate for them made me not feel as bad, he's the better player and cooler dude who we still could use more and it sucked losing him knowing how good of friends he was with everyone but Jake hurts me more on an emotional level for some reason, maybe it's because Jake was here longer and seemed more part of the rebuild and found/developed by the FO or something like that but man this sucks more than it should for me and I keep trying to look at this objectively to get over it.

The thing that's been 'nice' about Dex and Jake is that pretty much everyone knew and understood that the Cubs weren't going to resign them at the end of their contracts, nor should they have. Jake walking off the mound in Game 4 down 3-0 in the series had that extra meaning because pretty much everyone there knew it was their last time seeing him in a Cubs uniform. Beyond that, even though Jake resurrected his career with the Cubs, they both somewhat felt like hired guns compared to this core of players we've watched grow up through the organization. Both of them were fun as hell to watch, but losing them is nothing compared to the eventual trade of one of the core guys you see popping up in everyone's signature around here. That plus the relative suddenness of a trade will be gut punch.

Heh, I had the complete opposite experience. Jake's kickass game against the White Sox in 15 stopped a lengthy losing streak for me at games.

By bWAR, at least, it’s closer to mid-60s for Sandberg and high-50s for Sosa.

By fWAR, the Sandberg trade, once you account for all the players involved, came out as net +59.8. The Sosa trade comes out to +61.3. Bell's -2 fWAR season in '93 puts Sosa just a bit ahead of Ryno in net value.

If you extend it, Sosa gets 5.7 more from being traded for Mike Fontenot and Jerry Hairston, plus 0.7 more for Hairston being traded for Phil Nevin.

That game stopped a 6 game losing streak for me including the scheduled double header vs the Nats.

Knew this was coming but still a bummer. What a Cubs tenure. I'm glad he's in Philly so I'll get to see him pitch. Kinda annoyed I missed him in Florida. I was at the Phillies game in Sarasota against the Orioles when it was announced. Place was freaking out. (side note: pitching for the Orioles was Cashner, which I for some reason found amusing).

Considering this weak market, I'm surprised that Boras got a deal like this for Arrieta.

I do think that this is a good move for the Phillies. They can live with 3 years, and this gives them some flexibility. I doubt Klentak is going to go out and sign Cobb unless the price is really in their range, but I could see him explore the trade market for another starter to go with Nola/Arrieta, which would really prime them if their offense is steady and the pen is improved.

Really wonder where Cobb goes. It feels like almost any team could be in play on that.

https://www.mlb.com/cubs/news/cubs-grat ... -268653534

"I'm happy for him," said Cubs infielder Tommy La Stella, who exchanged text messages Monday with Arrieta. "It's awesome, and it'll be a nice fit for them. He has an opportunity to influence a team that will be pretty good sometime soon."

I was really hoping for better quotes from Tommy. [scrolls further down the article] Oh yeah, there it is.

"It's going to be weird," La Stella said. "We have an off-day in Chicago [on June 4] before Philly comes to town. It'll be good. We can hang out. It'll be good to see him."
