I can't find that article so maybe I'm crazy but I thought it was Gordo or Levine who mentioned the Cubs were getting massive overages bill in the
"construction projects" hotel ect. I thought it was over a $100M.

Sharma in his latest article says that the payroll limit is 246, and that we chose to keep Hamels because Chatwood and Darvish were such busts. Still not sure I buy it, but that's what he's putting out there.

That should be viewed as the Ricketts’ problem, not the Cubs’ problem.

Hm, but the Bulls are 14M(!) over the salary floor and haven't sold a 2nd round pick in almost 18 months. Where is that dough coming from?

I'm starting to wonder if people aren't buying it because they don't want to buy it.

Sort of like Trump supporters getting facts thrown at them and just choosing not to believe them.

Also, I'm not comparing these Cubs fans to Trump supporters on any other level.

Not saying it will happen, but the Cubs coming back from a 3-1 deficit to win the World Series does seem like the appropriate way to cap off this season and make the 30-for-30 even better.

FUN REALIZATION the brewers message board fans were right all along with their posts about how the cubs were mortgaging their future with all their bad fa signings and wouldn’t be able to improve the team down the road (aka now)

I still think we'll get some value out of Yu. Chatwood is pocket change, comparatively, and we might not have won the WS without Heyward so I'm already good on that one.

If Yu is still having arm problems next year I'm fully on the "make Yu pitch with his left hand" train. We'll get some value out of this guy yet!

He also implied that the Cubs winning one WS in this stretch would make them similar to the 2005 White Sox, which made no sense.

Ralph doesn’t list us as a “fit” for Bryce. But he predicts 10/320 for him. If he goes for 10/320 (or say ends up at 12/350) and we don’t get him that’s a horsefeathering joke. That AAV isn’t bad.

Ah yes, but where does Sharma rank on this list, considering that's who you quoted as the one who wrote the limit is $246 million?

Although, at least we have Charles the horsefeathering Cat to make us feel better.

I also suppose that after another year of evaluation, maybe they just don't think Harper is worth that type of investment. Did the dude even break 2 WAR in 2018?

I happen to think he is worth it, but the Cubs don't care what we think.

There's a growing consensus in the neighborhood of 33 million AAV for Harper. Heyman and his industry friend averaged that, Fangraphs crowdsourced that, and now Ralph. Even if it's 35 million, and even if 246 million is a hard cap for the offseason, you can make that fit. How deep the roster ends up being does depend on how well you can do for yourself in the trade market though. If you can dump Chatwood/Duensing/Kintzler without eating significant dollars or attaching meaningful prospects, and/or if you can get small pieces in return for them or Russell(e.g. a reliever, a bench SS, a backup C), then things get a lot easier.

I just was going to post almost essentially this. If Harper comes in closer to $30 aav than $35 like some seem to think. It doesn’t take a ton of crazy moves to fit him in and stay under 246. You would need someone to take about half of Chatwood’s remaining money +/-, Kintzler, Duensing, and Russell and we’d have some room to play with.

Getting someone to take say $10 million remaining on Chatwood, or even look to trade Q and get something actually decent and cheaper back to clear him and someone to take all of Kintzler, Duensing and Russell (or just non-tender) money gets us down to about $200 for LT purposes.

Hell, even if they don't sign Harper, I'd love for them to figure out ways to get Chatwood, Duensing and Kintzler off the team.

If Jon Gray really could be had for Ian Happ, I'd say do it today and then work on the best deal that can be had for Quintana. I think Q will be better in 2019, but the price savings would probably be worth it.

On Chatwood, I've seen a couple people throw out a Chatwood/Cozart swap that would be a wash on dollars but would provide the Cubs with a better fit for the roster (assuming they move on from Russell). The hope there would be that his shoulder is 100% in 2019 and he'd get back to 2017 levels of production.

If we have to skimp somewhere in order to get Bryce, my vote is for it to be the pen. I think that between dealing Happ or Schwarber for a good pen arm and using our group of Webster, Maples, Norwood, Alzolay, Mekkes, and others- that we'd find a serviceable group.

And address it at the deadline, if Carl and/or Morrow are broken.

Yeah I really like that move if the money is a net zero. I’d even include a fairly decent prospect on our side with + like Vic/Maples to get it done.

Agree, it’s the hardest roster spot to lock down anyways with its inherit volatility. There’s always guys available for nothing as the season goes on. Add 1-2 cheap guys in a Happ trade and maybe a Rule 5 guy along with the Iowa shuttle guys to fill out what we already have on the roster to start the year.

Sure, they'll get some value from him, but the likely window of that value shrank pretty dramatically with this year being a bust. There's zero chance the Cubs signed him without figuring that at least the last couple of seasons on his deal are probably going to stink; now they're looking at getting year 6 in year 1 on a 32-year old pitcher with a long injury history.

And clearly they can't shrug off what Chatwood is making; it's not like they signed him like the dumpster pitcher he is.

And the Heyward thing is moot; the dude's an anchor at this point and is only going to get worse. That's a ton of dead/dying/very sick money between these 3.

And don't forget! We may have to pay Chatwood an extra $4m if he's an All-Star and wins the Cy Young in 2019!
