God I want Yelich and then Harper on this team. That line up would be an absolute monster. Throw Happ,Almora,Alzolay and Ademan at them.

The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

(age opening day 2019)

C - Contreras (26)
1B - Rizzo (29)
2B - Baez (26)
SS - Russell (25)
3B - Bryant (27)
LF - Schwarber (26)
CF - Yelich (27)
RF - Harper (26)

Would this be a good opening day 2019 lineup?

Almora or Happ and Monty (if he wants to start/they need starters this year) then a minor leaguer or two (Alzolay, Ademan, Zagunis) get it done? I want Yelich bad.

No.

Almora AND Happ and Monty may be a start, but even that can get blown away by other teams.

Two things:

Yelich is better than Ozuna and has a better contract situation,
The Marlins don't need to trade Yelich at this point.

They'd be smart to hold out for a HUGE package for Yelich.

My thought is would the Cubs be willing to give up one of Baez/Russell for Yelich?

How about Russell/Baez, Almora, Montgomery, Ademan, maybe more for Yelich and Castro

Yelich fills CF for the next few years, Castro gives you a more than capable back up MI

I mean Happ and Monty plus a decent prospect is a pretty good haul. Happ hit 24 HRs as a 22 year old rookie, is a switch hitter and has positional versatility. If he wasn't called up last year or didn't lose prospect status he'd probably be a top 10 overall MLB prospect, Monty is a controllable starter for 4 years who's had major league success. Throw in Ademan or Alzolay and then a 4/5th OF type like Zagunis, that's a pretty strong offer. I'd expand it to Javy, Happ and Monty and we get Starlin back if that's what it took. I love Yelich.

Yelich is great but if we really do plan on getting Bryce I dont see it fitting in Theo's plans right now. I think this year we roll with Schwarber LF, Almora CF, Heyward RF with Zobrist platooning on the corners. Happ gets moved for pitching or backs up Almora in center. Ideally they all play well enough that they stay in future plans and the outfield then becomes Schwarber LF, Almora+Heyward CF, Harper RF in 2018.

I just think we are stuck with Heyward and I cant see us going with an all left handed swinging starting outfield and having him on the bench, which is what we would have if we added Yelich and Harper and kept Schwarber. Would be great if we can move Heyward after this year, somehow. But until then, I think CF will be where we have to put him after we get Bryce.

These offers for Yelich are pretty crazy, IMO. He'd make us better, but not THAT much better. Happ + Almora in CF is pretty comfortably a 3 win platoon with significant upside. Unless you think that Yelich will find more power outside of FL, he pretty much is who he is. That's a really good, consistent 4+ win player. But you're sacrificing depth and flexibility just by trading those two. Adding in Monty and minor leaguers or Russell/Baez just doesn't do it for me.

Now, going back to TT's idea, if they would go for something like us taking on Volquez's bad salary + Yelich in return for Happ or Almora + minor league players, then I'd be really happy with the deal. That probably isn't enough, but we simply don't need Yelich as much as other teams.

Yelich is still pretty good vs LHP, .270/.330/.373 career slash line vs them. Assuming Happ or Almora is in the deal for him just sign Maybin or Austin Jackson to handle LHP to start for Schwarbs/Heyward along with Zobrist and/or Almora if it's only Happ going. Yelich really fits our plan right now, imo. Prime years, controlled, can be the "leadoff guy" and plays good defense.

The kicker here MIGHT be if the Cubs are willing to take on a bad contract like Chen to go along with Yelich.

Chen has 3 for $52mm left with a $16mm vesting option in the 4th year.

It was either him or Heyman with the Sanchez thing? Did we lose that thread to the great board crash? He was the idiot who caused the stir that we went over the LT this past year and then we figured out he either didn’t know how the LT works or how to do simple math.
