Very solid move for them, he helps them out for a number of reasons.

So that leaves Cobb and Holland as the last prominent free agents left.

Do the Cubs save money by releasing Grimm now? And if so I wonder if they will be enough under the luxury tax threshold to go out and sign Greg Holland.

They save about $2 million. I'm guessing they put that toward in-season moves.

Yes, they only owe him about $500k I believe so save around $1.5-2 million. This puts them maybe ~$13 million under so unless Holland comes super cheap (I don't have much care for him to begin with) I doubt they'd add him to basically have no room for anything in season.

Yeah, I think Holland is overrated and don't care to sign him unless it's super cheap. He should've worked out a deal with the Rockies.

I think the Cardinals might get desperate and sign him if their bullpen implodes. Maybe the Giants sign him?

The Phillies have signed second base prospect Scott Kingery to a six-year contract through the 2023 campaign, according to a team announcement. It’s worth $24MM in guarantees, Jon Heyman of FanRag tweets. The pact also features club options for the 2024, ’25 and ’26 seasons, meaning it could cancel out three of Kingery’s free-agent years. Those options are worth $13MM, $14MM and $15MM, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reports. Kingery is a client of PSI Sports Management.

Kingery’s payday is a record-breaking amount for a player who has never appeared in the majors, easily beating out the five-year, $10MM guarantee the Astros gave first baseman Jon Singleton (an ex-Phillies prospect) back in 2014. Kingery and Singleton are the only two players to ever receive long-term deals before debuting in the majors. The Singleton contract hasn’t worked out at all for the Astros, but the Phillies weren’t going to let that deter them from wrapping up Kingery for the long haul.

I met Kingery during ST a couple weeks ago. Signed my hat. Nice kid. A guy next to me asked him if he was excited to play with Arrieta (the signing had been announced a few minutes prior) and Kingery responded, "......is that a real thing that's happening?" And then grinned ear to ear. Never witnessed a fan break news about a team to that team's player before.

I couldn't find a grumpy seal gif quick enough but I will say that I bet you $100 if La Stella gets the chance he's sliding spikes up at this moving-in sonofabitch.

Popular breakout candidate:

I'm always ready to be a fan of the switch hitting power/speed (he's not so fast but still) player that can handle an up the middle position.

Acuna turned down a 5 or 6 year offer for around $30 million, I assume if he would've accepted this would've allowed him to start the year right away in MLB since they would've got a year or 2 of FA bought out.

I don't think five or six years buys out any free agency. Seems crazy for him not to take this deal since he doesn't lose any free agency years and it doesn't seem too far off from what he'd earn throughout the arbitration years if he ends up really good. Although there are probably team options at the end, and that would change things a bit.

Yeah I’d guess there were 1 or 2 team options at the end like the deal that Philly guy got that probably takes it to $55-70 million total if the options are exercised.

I know he has the reputation of being a prodigious power hitter, but he's 37 and had a .674 OPS last year and was worth negative WAR in both versions of it. If I recall he was trying to get a modest to high contract in the 3-4 year $50-$75 mil range. That horsefeathers ain't happening. Feel bad for him. He didn't really put it together until he was reaching 30 and he signed a contract extension before FA which totally screwed him out of more money. I think he would've hit FA at 32 or 33 when he was still hitting tons of homers. Probably would've gotten a huge pay day.

Yeah, I guess it's just surprising because usually these guys are in a long term contract when they fall off the cliff, so they linger.

I love how the Offseason Transactions thread is getting bumped up because it kind of feels like the offseason this week.
