I feel like for years, it was common knowledge that if you were not going to be competitive, it didn't make any sense to spend money on bullpen talent. Now it's almost becoming the opposite. It's an interesting development.

Look, at this point I'm pretty sure the 2018 season has been cancelled and they just forgot to tell us.

It is way different. But for years, it was a lot less likely that in order to get a guy for the bullpen, you had to give him a multi-year deal. I think now that you do, it makes sense to grab the guy you really like and hope you start your window in year 2 or 3 of his deal.

In some cases, yes. But the White Sox picking up Avilan and Soria wasn't them slotting those two guys into their long term plans. They took on that salary, are going to throw them in a bunch of (most likely) low leverage innings for three or four months, and then try to flip them for prospects. It's essentially like taking on a bad contract to 'buy' prospects, just with a little delay/uncertainty built in.

I remember the vitriol here when we signed Howry and Eyre and clearly things have changed. They were mostly good relievers during their time here and I recall thinking it was a waste to spend money on middle relievers. Now the "market efficiency" is super pens.

And he's just bold enough to go by Dick rather than Richard. Nice!

Shocking the Mets are interested in players at a position of significant need but are too poor to afford them

He was my #1 choice for realistic backup catcher, hopefully Avila can be fit in somehow

Damn, really wanted him back. He's got a better chance for playing time there, though. All that's in front of him is Martin Maldonado.

I can't believe Avila will sign with us to back up Contreras. Somebody will offer him more money and more playing time.

He said at the beginning of the offseason he’d take a lesser role to be on a contender
