The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

The fix for the Cardinals is simple: jettison at least half of your fanbase. Also, dumping Matheny probably wouldn't hurt.

If I was a ball player, I'd avoid a town where people draw swastikas on each other for fun.

Jose Quintana will be on the next Cubs team that wins a World Series.

Until something drastically changes, they only way they'll get any decent FA is by overpaying like they did for Fowler.

And even then it'll be an uphill battle.

I love that [insert player] "doesn't want to be the guy" is the refrain of the spurned cards fan.
"Ooh, look at you, mister, 'I want to be a part of a competitive team.' A REAL ballplayer would jump at the opportunity to headline a roster full of trash."

maybe we don't "play in a desirable city." maybe we don't "win a lot of games." maybe our fans are "incredibly racist." and i guess we don't "have a chance in the division for the next ten years." maybe we do "condone drinking and driving and white-collar crime."

Go figure out a way to get both Yelich and Stanton, Theo.

I know we likely won’t get him and I don’t know if he makes a ton of sense but you do have to think we’d at least poke around and look in to what an offer would need to be for us to get him if we are only 1 of 4 teams he’d go to.

In all seriousness, under which combination of players given up + Marlins eating salary would people be cool with acquiring Stanton?

During a "Not For Women Only" panel discussion, former Cubs pitcher Mike Bielecki asked several players to invent a baseball catch phrase for Viagra. Theriot's ad campaign: "Viagra -- I always play hard."

If teams are falling by the wayside, we definitely should poke around. The returns they were asking for, at least the ones I saw, didn't seem like much. If the Marlins have less leverage now ...

All that said, I suspect this is coming to one of three conclusions:

1) Dodgers on some sort of sweetheart deal for them
2) Yankees ... but this only happens if they take some salary in return or pay off a huge portion ...
3) Marlins pivot and deal away almost every other piece imaginable ... okay, not that extreme, but yeah, Yelich and others may have to go.

If it’s just Stanton I’d do Happ or Almora and Alzolay and they throw in ~$50 mil kicked in during options years and I’d willing to take back Volquez, Tazawa or Ziegler this year too. For Stanton and Yelich I’d do Almora, Happ, Alzolay, and other minor leaguers and they throw in ~$50 mil in the option years and again take back a Volquez, Tazawa or Ziegler as well.

Yeah, the package the Giants were offering was kinda weak. Could we get him with, say, Heyward, a few decent prospects, and a small mountain of cash?

Heyward is not going to waive his NTC to play for a rebuilding Marlins team
