The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

We don't know the return but this is a bizarre move for the Mariners. I'm guessing they're gonna go the Billy Hamilton route and assume he can play passable CF? It looks like he played 9 games in CF in the DWL in 2013 and that's it since going pro.

Elite speed should play...not sure about his arm.

4:19pm: Righty Nick Neidert is one of the pieces in the deal, Bowden tweets. A second-round pick in 2015, Neidert dominated in 19 High-A starts last year, posting a 2.76 ERA with 9.4 K/9 and 1.5 BB/9 over 104 1/3 innings. But he fell flat upon a promotion to Double-A, surrendering 17 earned runs on 33 hits and recording just 13 strikeouts against five walks in his 23 1/3 innings there.

4:30pm: Perhaps unsurprisingly, the M’s are gaining an additional $1MM in international bonus capacity as part of the deal, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com tweets. That’ll presumably go to the team’s efforts to land Japanese star Shohei Ohtani. Seattle now has just over $3.5MM in pool space — and just slightly more than any other Ohtani pursuer.

Christopher Torres and Robert Dugger are the other players in the deal, Jon Heyman of Fan Rag tweets.

4:28pm: All of Gordon’s contract is going to Seattle, Tim Healey of the Sun Sentinel reports.

Will the Braves prospects that were released be subject to this money too?

The Braves prospects(of which around half have signed already) are subject to either this or next years IFA pool money.

I thought this was such a huge win of a deal for the Marlins, considering their situation. They unloaded that contract - 38 million remaining and got ... passable assets in return. I guess it's possible that Gordon's offense holds up enough in the next few years, as his legs should be fine, but considering the Marlins stated goal was to dump salary, to get this move done without eating any money and getting moderately interesting guys in return ... seems like a nice coup for them.

On the flip side, I don't necessarily think it's a bad deal for the Mariners. I just think it's an odd deal. I mean, giving up the guys they did ... I'm not sure those prospects are bringing back anything better than Gordon. Still, taking a guy in the middle of his prime, heavily dependent on his legs, and transitioning him a to a relative new position? Eh. If it falters, that's a bad contract there. I think his legs probably hold up to his early 30's, and that's all the Mariners are looking at, so as long as he's decent defensively, they'll be fine, but it's a risk.
