According to Levine, Theo and Jed are in Dallas, presumably to meet with Darvish.

The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

I think he'll see that he's not a full-time player for the Cubs and decide he'd rather play everyday.

Why would a team in the Dodgers system want to help us?

Question: Even if there are ways to get Yu without screwing us on also getting Harper, is a 31-year-old Yu a guy you want to give six years and $25 million per to along with a draft pick?

It seems like a contract we may regret. Or not. Just asking.

Not saying it will happen, but the Cubs coming back from a 3-1 deficit to win the World Series does seem like the appropriate way to cap off this season and make the 30-for-30 even better.

We don’t give up a pick since he was traded mid year. And I’m guessing with this renewed interest they think the market for him may be down on the 6/25 aav

Crap. Good point about the pick. I hope you're right about the down market. That would be great.

I doubt its a down market for him, as much as its the higher market for Cobb, etc. If its 20 mill and a draft pick for Cobb, versus 25 mill for Darvish, its a no-brainer.

Additional rule: you have to have one or the other. The only exception is you have an amazing board name. davell, I'm looking at you; put up a [expletive] avatar or something if your name only sounds like somebody tried say Dave as they lapsed into a coma.

Yeah, I guess in that case I pass on both of them. I agree that Darvish is the better value at that point, but I don't actually think it's necessarily good value.

if your plan is to develop young hitters and buy established veteran pitchers, you have to accept the fact that you're not going to be getting awesome value on the pitching side. the cubs really need another good starting pitcher, and there aren't a ton of options out there. i'm all about the future and longevity, but i also want to be really good next year.

Are there any big name pitchers available next offseason? Who would the most likely ones be?

Yup. You can get the “value” ones year to year, but you need the aces too

There are but they are going to carry their own risks/be just as expensive with no more security of being a “good/safe deal.” Keuchel, Kershaw, Pomeranz, Garrett Richards, Corbin and Harvey are the top names off the top of my head. Price can opt out too.

As a side note I believe Fernandez would’ve been a FA next offseason too

Here's the thing, though. I think the Cubs will be really good next year already. Not the favorites, but playoff caliber. That's all that matters in the crapshoot of the postseason.

Don’t forget Britton next year. He’s big time if he stays healthy, just not a SP.

if we had to settle for lynn or something like that, i think the rotation would look kind of suspect. it's easy to forget that we lost arrieta, and the rotation already has a couple or relatively big unknowns. also, one of the best ways to try and beat the crapshoot is to get elite starters who can strikeout lots of guys.
